Not having either but being in the market for pistol pouches…which ones are more durable, and a better unit in your opinion? I am looking at the single pistol pouches…
Have used the BFG Ten Speed pistol mag pouches in the past, and am assuming those are the BFG ones that you are referring to, if not then just ignore me. Will say this in regards to to the Ten Speed, they are light and low profile. However, They can be a little bit of a pain since they are not easy to refill on the fly, more of a range concern than a combat one honestly, and when running slick mags, like a pair of older blued Beretta 92 mags, I have had them slide out on me. Think the Tacos would hold up better for harder use than the BFG, but have not had a chance to really play with any for any length of time as of yet.
I have been running both for 2 years. They both serve the same function (open topped multi-platform pouches). However, as others have stated Tacos are MUCH easier to put mags back into (such as during a tac load). Also the BFG ones tend to get scuffed up easier as the material takes a beating from velcro and straps dragging across it, no loss of function yet though.
I think the BFG ones are awesome if you arnt going to keep them filled most of the time (low profile concealed plate carrier, extra strong side mag ext) because they take up no space when in use. I’ve seen guys get rifle ones for the BACK of their plate carrier. For super duper shit hits the fan i guess, but 99% of the time they run them empty. Besides infrequent usage/low profile, and cost I cant think of a reason to pick them over Tacos.
I have been researching since posting this, and after reading your comments as well…I think the tacos will be a better all around system for me and my needs…I think they will
Stand up to a little more abuse than the BFG, not saying that I plan on throwing them around, but it can’t hurt to have a little more durability…Thanks everyone
Ive used both the BFG 10 speeds in some courses as well as the Tacos. As previous posters have mention it takes a bit of time and some slightly dexterous finger motions to get a mag back in the 10 speed one handed. The 10 speed for me was a lot easier to insert mags one handed when working with single stack mags, though it still took a bit more effort than I liked.
I keep my 10 speed on the strong side as an extras pouch flashlights, spare mags, mutitools… etc. I have noticed that for me when inserting 2 double stack mags, especially glock mags the first one goes in fine but it seems to stretch the material out enough where the second barely fits if at all.
The Tacos are definitely my go to pouches, and the 10s work as outstanding spare pouches as they weigh nothing and take up little to no space.
+1 on everything they said, and:
Tacos rely as much on the elasticity of their components as Ten Speeds but you can replace the Tacos’ shock cord when it wears out for VERY cheap, whereas you CANNOT replace any Ten Speeds’ rubber- the pouch itself must be replaced. It is also easier to fabricate some sort of active retention device, (another shock cord strap over the top of the mag for example), that will work with the Taco than it is with any Ten Speed. Nice for technical insertion/extraction, any motion-intensive, high-speed, aggressive shit, etc.
In addition to that, my Ten Speeds came from the factory (bout two years ago for reference) with ****ed up stitching that failed to hold their 5038 Tape to the pouch’s backing material. Easily fixed by hand with needle and Nylon thread, not a big issue. But when there are comparable or superior options on the market like the Taco, details like that lack of quality control are enough to sway customers… Sorry BFG. Just calling it how it is.
Have both.
Will keep and use both.
prefer taco.
Having used both I prefer the HSGI Tacos over the BFG 10 speeds simply due to retention and ease of reholstering mags. My M&P mags dont seem to hold too well in the BFG pouches when moving around a lot however had no issues with glock mags…
I just bought a pair of the tacos from Raven with their new paddle attachment. So far I like them.
