how to replace my colt gas key (staked)

Ok first off I did use the seach button, couldnt find anything about this. Maybe im not using the right terminology, but your help would be much appreciated with this.

So I have a Colt bolt carrier I got from a friend and the gas key needs to be removed. I got the front screw out but the rear is a mother and wont budge. Its staked pretty good, I thought about using my bench grinder to work the staked portion out then try again. But how have you guys done this in the past? Any tips or tricks to remove a staked gas key?

Thanks in advcance for the assistance guys, this site has always been a wealth of knowledge.

Just curious, why does it need removed?

Bench grinder will work as long as you plan on actually replacing the key. You could also just use a punch to push the staking back away from the screw head. Be sure to clean the mating surfaces very well and use new screws when you re-install the key.

the reason its being replaced is a few gas tubes wouldnt fit into it properly. Thats why i got this bad boy for free, tired a few gas tubes didnt fit in well, first a colt than an brownells and a BCM. So figured it was the key. The bolt is well loved but looks to bein rather good shape and its a colt so im not bummer out. But thanks for the advice, ill try it

Also possible to heat the carrier in the vicinity of the screw, then touch a bit of ice to the screw head to cool and shrink it and get after it with the wrench.

if the key is deformed you can reshape it with a shortened punch.

Sounds like there is some kind of thread-locker on the gas key screw and possibly between the key and carrier.
Have you tried heating it?
I you removed one of the screws the other should loosen and push the key upward without needing to remove metal from the key.
I’ve only replaced a dozen or so gas keys though, so if someone like IraqGunz has conflicting advice, go with it.

I would use a dremel or something like that if you are going to replace the key.

ETA: This should be done after using a torch and trying to deform the staking, but if the staking was done right, this should be required

If you are going to replace the key then use a bench grinder like you were thinking. You may need to wear some gloves because the carrier can get hot. Once you get past the screw head then the key will pop right off. Put some vice grips on the screw nub then twist it off.
