I’ve been seeing more and more of these cases where kids are interrogated with out their parents present or even aware. Since we leave the children in the care of the school, can one of our esteemed lawyers give us some verbiage to use in a letter to send to our kids schools so that our kids keeps his rights and they are not questioned with out our written permission? There was a family here in Colorado that incurred some pretty hefty legal bills because of stupid stuff like this. Can we wait till the kids take some history classes before I have to explain to my 7 year old when to invoke his 5th Amendment rights?
Think I’m an asshole? What if the SS guy had started asking about guns at home? Did daddy ever say anything bad about the President? I’ve heard my shooting buddies younger kids call his ARs ‘machine guns’.
Counselours taking girls to get abortions, kids getting questioned over presidential assasination plots- can schools just stick to trying to teach kids to read?
While the kid looks like a Grade A goofball, I didn’t see anything that suggested a credible security threat. If a 7th grader had been given a “talking to” by the SS during the Bush administration people would have lost their minds.
If you care about your kids, do not send them to a public school.
There is virtually nothing good about them. Most of the kids are rats, from rat families. The overwhelming majority of teachers these days are 2-bit communist freeloaders that hate your kids and hate you for sending them. It’s a conveyor belt, all the crap gets dumped on the belt, then gets dumped off the belt at the end of the line. Even if your kid does get an excellent teacher once in a while, they won’t be able to do much because they have to adjust their teaching style to a bunch of kids who got moved along no matter how good or bad they did.
Once your kid can read, write and do math, their success is limited only by their own internal motivation and moral compass. They don’t teach moral behavior or any sort of work ethic in school. There are some really great teachers still slugging it out in the school system, but they are the exception.
Most people on this board could teach their kid more in 2 hours than they’d learn all day in a public school. States post their curriculum for all subjects and grade levels on their department of education site.
This country has a severe cult of public education. We require college degrees now for jobs that never used to need it. Most college degrees are extremely worthless, they don’t even make you a cultured, well read, classically trained individual by the time you’re done. Unless you’re in the public sector the only jobs worth a damn are actual skilled professions and business ownership. A truly skilled profession would be something akin to being a doctor or a “professional soldier”, IE you can go anywhere in the world and be paid well in cash, gas, or ass… no matter the current “economic” situation is.
Frugality is another thing they’re not going to teach you in public school, or basic personal economics.

When my children were young, I taught them that there is a vast difference between “the police asking them questions” and “being questioned by the police.”
I have absolutely no issue with them answering more than that, when appropriate.
The police may be searching for a lost child. My children may have seen them recently, and could assist the police. Valuable time can be saved.
“Where do your Mommy and Daddy keep their guns? Who did your Daddy vote for?” are different topics.
I feel that my family has an obligation to assist law enforcement when possible. I also know that privacy is a real concern. The reason I have a brain is so I can balance those concerns.
Its a complicated world we all live in, these days.
The quality of a public school varies drastically depending on geography. I’m sure you already know that, but having gone to a good public school in Minnesota, I felt it was worth pointing out. That said, I haven’t seen a school in my current location I would want to send a kid to (public OR private) and will hopefully be moving before I have any kids.
You will see a drastic change in teacher and student quality if you can get your kids into a tracking program such as honors or AP classes.
Of course, I read on the news 2 weeks ago that a school in California is making the subject matter easier because the honors classes students are mostly white and asian and the regular classes are mostly black and latino.
After the information and testimony provided for the McMartin preschool and Wee Care Nursery School cases, I think I’d want to be there if my child was interviewed for anything related to a criminal matter.
In many (most?) jurisdictions, parental consent for interviews of any nature is a matter of courtesy or policy, not law. I don’t have the case cites handy, but challenges to confessions so obtained in permissive jurisdictions established that critical criteria were the miranda tests, not parental involvement or consent except where required by statute.
What I want to do is protect the childhood of my kids. In a time of expulsions and even criminal prosections for drawing pictures at school, I want to afford my children all of their legal rights.
How you can question a grade schooler and get any legitimate or useful information out of them is beyond me. Being able to use statements made by someone that hasn’t even studied or can barely read the consitution is beyond me.
I want my kids to be able to trust cops, but if my kids school (and they go to a private school, so I have more leverage) won’t protect my kids I’ll start teaching my 1st grader “Am I being detained? Am I free to go? I’ll make no statements with out my lawyer.”. Great world.
I would hope that schools would accept that parents set the rules for their kids, but it sure doesn’t seem like that is the case anymore.
Without getting prior permission from a child’s parent, or having them present, the questioning officer only promotes an antagonistic relationship with the parents and eventually the child as well. I see no reason for a child to be questioned without their parent or guardian present unless it directly involves abuse by them.
As far as I’m concerned no one needs to be questioning my child without me being present unless they witnessed a crime and they could help out in an immediate life threatening situation or emergency. All questioning outside of that should be met with “Please call my parents or their attorney.” in this day and age.
Reading reminds me a lot of my ex and her school.
It is a cult! And it by no means is a cult that supports free thinkers!
Before she went back to school she wanted her own AR.
I even bought her a Bushmaster lower, (she liked the name, and the snake’s boner on the roll mark)
She enrolled in an all women’s college behind my back majoring in education. (The beginning of the end for us.)
She quickly was indoctrinated, and now feels that firearms are wrong, and owning one is immoral. (Even though she had a completely built AR, with a lower she filled the paperwork for.)
This school doesn’t give out grades, but instead issues “affirmations”.
She is now majoring in philosophy, (she wants a PhD now), and has turned into a lefty radical.:bad:
Edit:
The scariest thing for me is the garbage my ex will try and fill my little girl’s head with.
That and how much my little girl is at that school’s daycare.
Their is no cut dry answer
Varies state to state etc…
Also by situation circumstances and age
A 17 year old will often be dif in some cases then a 7 year old
Some states anything he said on his own can’t be used ? Others yes
Unless they saw something ?
I would sadly say teach your kids “I want a lawyer”
Then it all should stop
