Hi there is there such a thing as “breaking in” a AR rifle? Someone told me on the first 200rds of so to shoot them slow and let rifle cool and on the next 200rds do a rapid fire or a tourture test th make sure everything seals properly is there any trouth to this or is someone BS me? BTW I have a Stag rifle.
No “break-in” is necessary. This isn’t a dedicated match rifle with a $600 custom barrel. Just shoot the thing and don’t worry about it. Clean it up when you’re done.
If it is a chrome lined barrel, no break in required.

First hundred rounds or so I go heavier on the lube than normal.
Well, yes and no.
There is what I call a “break-in” period on a weapon that I intend to use for serious social purposes. (self defense, killing zombies, what have you) I tend to try and put 1,000 rounds through the weapon in a couple of range trips (400-500 rounds per trip) to test the function of the weapon and make sure it runs reliably. Generally if there is some sort of QC defect it will appear within the first thousand rounds.
Part of that 1,000 rounds should be sighting the weapon in, part should be dedicated to making sure the weapon gives acceptable accuracy, and part should be doing normal carbine drills.
Technically speaking, this isn’t a break-in period because the weapon, if assembled properly from proper parts, is pretty much good to go from the box mechanically speaking. I guess a better term is “evaluation period”.
I know with some high dollar custom rifles there is a procedure to break-in the bore, but on a general utility carbine like an M4 that isn’t really necessary.
This whole break-in thing is some kind of retarded fairy legend. Just shoot the phacken thing, like 500 rnds. in under an hour. If you can get the barrel to glow, you’ve successfully “broken-in” your rifle.
Clean it, lube it well and shoot it. Some say non-chrome barrels need breaking in, some people (i.e. Gale McMillian) says they don’t. http://www.6mmbr.com/GailMcMbreakin.html
I agree with Gale. My wifes AR30 .338 Lapua wasn’t ‘broken-in’. We fired 100 rounds out of it the first day we ever shot it (without all the clean every shot, spill goats blood on it etc) and I didn’t clean it until a week later. It’s got under 1000 rounds through it and shoots 1/2" groups at 200yds all day long with 300gr Sierra Matchkings (handloads).
Clean it lube it well and shoot the piss out of it. Clean it and lube it well and shoot the piss out of it. Continue for 3 to 5 thousand rounds and the trigger should be broken in pretty well.
Sorry to hi-jack but what about stainless barrels. I’m getting stainless White Oak Armament barrel for my SPR build. What is a proper brake in procedure for stainless barrel?
Thanks
Follow what the manufacturer tells you. That way if something goes wrong, they cannot blame you.

I am with gotm4 regarding Gale McMillian’s thoughts/advice. I didnt do any kind of special break in on my 700 LTR and it will shoot one hole groups with Federal GMM. Definitely no “break in” on a chrome lined barrel.
Thanks everyone for the replys
I gotta’ go with C4 on this.
