This isn’t that special but I have had a few people ask me about these so I thought I would post my process for making them. It is basically just an inexpensive but effective take on the old inner tube trick. Enjoy!

That is similar to the hook and flap that I mentioned in the article. I really, really liked how adjustable it was but it wouldn’t stay on the gun. Either the flap pulled off or the Velcro adhesive gave out. It was Velcro brand “Industrial” adhesive backed and the ACOG was desgreased. I was going to try gluing the Velcro down but I tried the inner tube thing first.
Mind if I ask what makes it a much better idea?
For me it is the fact that you can control the amount of light. I sometimes want an in between all off or all on. There is nothing wrong with your way, and does have its advantages. I probably should have worded my earlier post a little better
Absolutely. That is what I really liked about the Velcro flap. It can be more finely tuned.
I just noticed this thread, and since my little velcro affair was brought up I figured I would throw in my .02.
I don’t think that the industrial velcro is the best thing in the world, and I really wish that Trijicon would just make something professionally to solve the issue.
I initially made my cover out of immediate need, and I had the velcro on hand. I know competition shooters that use the innertube solution, and that’s what I wanted to do but forgot to pick up the innertube before the match and didn’t have tape in my Jeep. I have used the velcro tab in competition, range work, and military training. I haven’t had it stick to anything, but I certainly don’t consider it impossible. Whatever works for the individual’s need is the right answer. I am going to try out both the velcro and the innertube techniques over the next three weeks to better evaluate them both.

I think that my issues with the Velcro cover were partially to blame on the chest rig that I was using. It has Velcro on the front right where the ACOG was coming in contact with it. But I did have issues with the adhesive giving out over time, especially in the sun/heat.
In the past I have used Gorilla Glue to make sure that Velcro stays stuck to items. I just didn’t want to glue the Velcro to my ACOG before I tried a few other things.
This particular inner tube cover is working quite well for me right now.
I’ve been using some E-tape, but I was wondering if adding a sheet of photochromic plastic over the light tube would work?
The brighter out it is, the more it would block. On darker days it wouldn’t be as light blocking. Maybe double up the sheets if one doesn’t give enough blocking.
