This is a great site. I’m not a newbie when it comes to AR’s / M-16/4’s, but I am definately a newbie when it comes to building them from the ground up. My experience has mostly been field stripping and minor tinkering with the weapon system from a user end perspective as a soldier. Now as I am trying to get into actually changing out barrels, gas blocks and FF rails, I am running into issues due to lack of gunsmithing experience.
I have read the How-To articles on Arfcom on FF rails, but I have this unique looking Daniel Defense rail that I am trying to remove so I can remove the barrel and I have no idea what kind of tool I need to remove it. It looks like I need some sort of spanner wrench to break loose the ring and maybe it twists off?
Here are some pictures. It’s a 7" DD FF rail with a 5" TROS 9mm barrel (just in case some wise guy decides to say that the barrel is already out).
Insert the upper in a vice using upper receiver block (I use DMPS receiver claw).
With the upper secured use strap wrench to loosen the retaining ring. Once the ring is unscrewed the rail will come off. - Keep an eye out for the retaining pins that will come out with the rail.
Use armores wrench to loosen the DD barrel nut and the barrel can be removed.
