I just got my IWC/HSP Thorntail Scoutlight mount and now its time to cut off the sling mount as it gets in the way of the light.
I have no dremel, I have no paint/finishing material.
Can someone please walk me through this step by step?
I’m assuming step 1 is buy a dremel. I’m guessing I’ll be using the cut off wheel to cut this off and then something to polish it up?
What do I use to refinish it so it will be black and not rust? It will be covered by the light so I really don’t care what it looks like as far as a perfect color match.
To be clear, I am talking about this. (Picture is of an airsoft gun, but its the same part)
I’ve never had the balls to try it with mine but I think that Buddyhoohaw did to make his mini scout fit with a gear sector mount. I just put my mounts on the top rail instead of the side and I’ve managed to make it clear.
Well that really wasn’t bad at all…considering I had absolutely zero experience going into this.
I cut off the loop and then sanded it down with a sanding drum. Took about 5 minutes and looks pretty good. I could easily polish it out to a smoother/better looking finish but I’m not overly concerned. The sharp edges are gone and thats all that matters to me.
Here is the finished product minus the light mount. This is the Gear Sector mount. The IWC thorntail will place the light about 2" further out making it perfectly accessible for activation with my thumb and more importantly exactly like all my AR15s.
Here it is with the IWC Thorntail. (First Thorntail ever on a SCAR???) I originally bought this Thorntail for my 12.5" AR15 with a 7" rail but after speaking with Earl at IWC yesterday I’ve got another one headed this way. I decided to use that one on my 12.5" (since thats what its designed for and will be a simple install) and try the new one out on my SCAR.
I’m 100% convinced that this is the absolute best light mount for any weapon with picatinny rails. It is unbelievably light weight and places the light up and out of the way. It kind of sucks taking a dremel to your $2,800 rifle but for those of us who only care about function (and as far as form goes, the cuts are completely hidden. It looks nice too) this is the way to go.
As you can see, it does not contact the rifle at all. I don’t have the light on it yet, but it appears to be mounted in a perfect position for thumb activation.
I just need to get this light out of the Gear Sector mount. I loctited it in and its not budging.
I will try my M300 out of its Gear Sector mount instead and get pics up later today.
