how to adjust front sights

i just recently bought a sig 1911 scorpion and i love it. it looks awesome and groups superb exactly 8 inches to the left of where i’m trying to shoot lol. any ideas on how to adjust the dovetail front sights without spending 120 to 180 on the adjustment tool? i am obviously not going to hack it with a hammer and punch but just curious if there is a cheaper tool that works well for say about 50 dollars or something.

Normally one moves the rear sight.

Yep, move the rear sight to the right.

Watch the Dawson Precision videos on replacing front and rear sights; therein you’ll get insight on how to move them since obviously you need to be able to move them to knock them out.

I’m not a fan of sight pushers. A good vise on a solid bench with the right punches and hammers, using masking tape to protect finishes, is my preferred way to go.

It doesn’t take long to develop the right touch to move the sights without hacking.

thanks guys! the rear one does make sense. i m not a fan of the dovetail either but i see i have to loosen the set screw.

8" off at what distance?

15 yards? 25? If so, and it really is the gun, you have other problems. That rear sight is gonna be hangin’ off one side of the slide to move POI 8". It’s either your shooting or the barrel ain’t parallel to the sights for some reason.

I agree, that’s a really significant drift.

Note that it could be a combination of both front and rear sights being off to put windage 8" out of whack at, say, 15 yards. His sights would be off about nine one-hundredths of an inch, net. Almost a tenth of an inch. Yeah that’s quite a bit.

I like to start with both sights centered relative to the outside of the slide, then drift the rear sight as needed from there.

i was shooting at a 6 inch wide box that was stepped out at 20 yards. i was using crap ammo so i have to set up a target and use good ammo to see exactly where i am shooting. 8 inches was a guess at this time. it is crappy out right now and cold so maybe next week i will get a closer idea.

I got money on the gun being dead-on…

If the front sight is centered over the bore and the rear sight is centered over the firing pin its you, not the gun. I either of them is off, drift them so they are center. Their position in the dovetail or relationship to the side of the slide is irrelevant. Dovetails aren’t always perfectly centered and slide demensions aren’t always perfect either. The sights relation to the center of the bore is what matters.

Use a hammer and a punch, suck it up and buy a tool or pay a gunsmith to do it. I don’t see a gunsmith charging more than 30 bucks.

I agree, the gun is probably dead on.
