How important is it not to have a oil hole?

I just noticed some difference about two LMT lowers that I bought after the Ban was over that these 2- LMT lowers don’t have a oil hole on the side of the Rec at the front pivot pin spring. Do I need to add a hole on the side of the lower Rec to oil the spring at the front pivot pin?

I’ve never had a problem not having them there. No biggie on this side.

It’s better to have it, but I’ve managed to get by for a decade or so with a few Colt’s that don’t have them (Early small-pin lowers that I drilled out for push-pin detents).
If you were operating in extreme conditions (lots of mud, sand, dust, slime spewing zombies…) it would be more of an issue. Most of us aren’t doing that so it’s less of an issue.

I’ve always wondered if it was actually for oil…or…is it to allow water to flow through it after submersion in water.

I think it’s probably for both.
Neither of the Colt Armorer’s manuals address it (that I could find anyway). In fact, they don’t even show the weep hole in the diagrams.

It’s called a weep hole, designed for whatever is in there to work it’s way out-hopefully. The ejector has one as well, that’s why in cleaning you’re supposed to place a drop or two of (your brand) on the ejector while the bolt face is facing up and depress the ejector a few times.

Isn’t that what I just said…

Easy Francis, get some sugar.

This NEEDS to be added to the chart! :stuck_out_tongue:

This should be added to the chart.

I have noticed the the the new lowers from LMT do have the Hole on the side.

It’s for neither.

It’s so you can capture the spring when you assemble the front pivot pin assembly.

Insert front pivot spring into receiver.

Depress with punch/pin past hole.

Insert smaller diameter pin/punch into hole and capture (hold) spring

Remove first punch/pin.

Insert front pivot detent.

Insert front pivot pin.

Remove capture punch/pin and apply spring pressure to front pivot pin detent.

For installing the pin, detent and spring I just use the $5 tool and it takes maybe 20 seconds YMMV.

I have a beer when I do it, because I saved $5 and used tools I already had! :stuck_out_tongue:

Not being argumentative, but I have not heard that in either of the two COLT armorer’s courses that i have attended. Thye have taught the tool method, and it is a finese thing and once you get it it’s easy. It is fun to see the detent fly across the room folowed by curse words.

Jack

Well, that’s what I was told in my Defensive Edge armorer’s course.

I guess you could use finese, or you could do it the easy way.

But Colt people don’t tend to like “good enough” but prefer “perfect”.

I assemble several lowers at work per month (can’t drink beer there) and wrote the tool off on my taxes…it’s equipment for work YMMV.

gotm4, who makes the $5.00 tool you are talking about? Where can I buy it?
