How I came to buy my SIG716 ???

I recently purchased one of these things and all I can say is WOW. I admit it was an impulse buy (Day after the election/panic buy) Wanted something to cheer me up, plus it was my anniversary present to myself. anyway

I had been half ass looking at a 308 AR but honestly didnt realize that there were that many different options. From the little looking I did I thought there was the DPMS, BM, (which I remember getting some bad reviews a long time ago) and then the KAC SR25 or similar in style and price. Then the actual AR10 (That I have actually owned two of in the past but sold them) Now after more research I see there are several others…

I have always tried to steer clear of the DPMS rifles not because there was anything in particular wrong with them but because I prefer MIL SPEC and DPMS always seems like commercial BR shooter type stuff (To me anyway)

I had already owned two AR10’s that I bought used with plans to customize but never got around to before I sold them (Make that almost GAVE them away). Back then it seemed like everything 308 related was higher in price by a good bit JUST BECAUSE and that is why I never got around to swapping out uppers to FT and then doing anything else to them (Optics/rails) ect.

Fast forward to present day and I ended up finding a few 308 AR rifles locally when I drove around to the different shops. In a high end shop that has EVERYTHING you could want to include CLASS III I first saw the SIG716 and it looked nice, but at his price that I now realize was ridiculous $2900 I started looking at a DPMS he had which it too was over priced at $2099

Each rifle had some stuff added on, but not anything to justify the price. Just some extra magpul add ons. But up to this point I had not seen either of these two rifles in person, so I had nothing to compare price wise. A visit to a second shop (The low end of my local shops) and I didnt find anymore to compare to, and then a third which is a great shop but had little in 308 and was packed out and I didnt wait around to get my hands on one.

So I wallk into Academy Sports.

It is a grad opening of our new Academy and I already love these stores but now even more with a new one in town. They had both the DPMS and SIG. I wanted to see the DPMS Recon I had seen online, but they had a cheaper version I cant remember what it was called but I was not impressed. Especially beside the SIG716. Side by side I figured by the time I added stock, BUIS, Rail system to the DPMS I was actually getting off cheaper with the SIG716 even though up front cost was $500 more. And thats not counting the receiver upgrades that you cant add to a DPMS (Sling QD) and the MAGPUL pistol grip.

I am sure that I would have been happy with the DPMS too but I have zero regrets with the SIG716. It shoots smooth and the kick is about what I expected. Seems lighter(the kick) than the AR10 w 16" barrel I HAD but maybe that is because of the rubber butt pad the SIG has and I think also it may be a little heavier too.

I don’t know anything about the SIG. From what I’ve seen they are actually trying to make an attempt at developing a nice product. IIRC, there are a couple features that the 416 shares, the integral QD in the receiver at least look nice, their piston system seems like a ground up and not a retrofit. Etc

However, I would not compare anything to a DPMS 308 as it’s probably the worst example I can think of. Whatever you bought, as long as it wasn’t a DPMS - you won. I’d never forgive DPMS for that horrible abomination of a stubby buffer they have. “Hey I know! Let’s take all the issues with carbine ARs and make them worse just so we don’t need to make a new tube!”

I’m looking at the Sig too. I already have the 516, and thought it would be sort of redundant to get the 716. But the others I have looked at were either uninspiring or out of my price range. What did you pay for the 716? My gun shop wants 1850ish ifi remember correctly.

Academy Sports had it for $1600. I’ll do my best to give it a good work out but dont know when it will be.
I was lucky to have shot it at all but was able to drive down the road of our camp and fire it into a berm. I didnt even have a target hung, I just shot pine cones and sticks.
I plan on getting to the range some day soon and bring all my ARs. I have several that I have never fired or only did a quick mag dump after I assembled them to check function.
I also have about 4 different optics that need to be zeroed not to mention BUIS that have never been adjusted. It is going to be a big day…WHENEVER it comes. Most likely over the Holidays

I’m seriously looking at a Sig 716 as well and would like to hear your thoughts after running the gun pretty hard.

$1600.00 is a great price, I can’t them anywhere for even close to that.

I also like the fact they can run PMAGs.

Anyone else have a Sig 716?

Just bought the 716 on a whim, and put some cheap Leupold glass on it.

I am pretty impressed by it, it’ll outshoot me easily.

No issues running any ammo I’ve tried so far, be it handloads or wolf or every different weight and brand I can get my hands on from wallyworld of the local shops. It seems to favor 180gr.

It’s fucking heavy as all shit. My BCM M4 feels like a toy after carting the Sig around for a day. My only real complaint about the rifle.

The flip up irons they include aren’t terrible, but they’re not that great either.

Felt recoil is about average for an AR-10 style platform.

Have not shot or even held the new Colt, I’m hoping I get an opportunity to soon so I can compare the two.

I purchased a 716 to after the election, but before the Sandy Hook massacre. I to put some cheap Leupold glass on mine in a LaRue mount. I gave the rifle a quick cleaning and off to my property to shoot. I had several malfunctions the first day. All of the malfunctions were the bolt not picking up a new round from the mag. This happened several times and I did have one round stick in the camber, but that was some old Federal soft points that I was just burning up for break in. The rifle was very accurate and the recoil was much less than I expected, probably due to the weight of the rifle. But the malfunctions were unacceptable.

I took the rifle home and gave it another, more thorough cleaning. I had not cleaned the buffer or buffer tube and there was a lot of oil/grease in this area from the factory. I don’t think this caused any issues, but I should have gave it a look before shooting.

By this time the massacre had occured and ammo was hard to find. I was alble to score some Federal ball 7.62x51 in the plain white boxes, 100 rds. Took the rifle back out and there were no jams whatsoever. Accuracy was around 2 MOA. I suspect I could get better results there with a better scope and ammo. BTW, the scope used was a Leupold 1.5 to 4. This is certainly no complete test and the rifle has not been ran hard, but I am satisfied and it is a keeper. I picked mine up for $1699 before tax.

I cleaned the hell out of mine before taking it out to the range the first time. The grease that ships with it is very thick and glue-like. I have googled and seen several people taking it out and having issues without completing a full cleaning prior to firing.

I have had literally zero malfunctions with it, and get 1.5" groups with Wolf ball. With FGMM I was able to accomplish about .8 MOA with a few five round groups from benchrest.

I have a similar setup, with the Leupold Mark 2 mount with an older VX-3 variable. I think mine’s 1.5-7X and seems to fit this rifle very well.

My only real complaint about it is the weight.

Considering the price is similar, how did you all decided to buy this instead of an FNAR or DPMS/BM/Rem?

Eeewww. Gross.

The DPMS 308 AR platform imo should be avoided at all costs. That little stupid buffer is a deal breaker imo. We saw horrible bolt bounce and cyclic rates with those under highspeed camera, absolute fucking garbage.

I hear you, but a better buffer is a cheap fix. The reason why I asked is that all 3 are price competitors, each with “fatal flaws” compared to KAC/LMT/Larue, etc. according to the predominant opinion here on M4C. The FNAR sounds like the most reliable (?), DPMS the most parts compatibility, etc. etc.

Isn’t the FNAR a dressed up BAR? Doesn’t seem to possess the same pedigree as an AR military platform. I too would go with the Sig over the DPMS or FNAR.

I agree. It is hard to take the FNAR seriously lumping Sig in with DPMS is a huge stretch to say the least.

I bought the 716 in FDE about a month ago. Was able to grab 16 additional P- mags before the craziness. Still no optics, and I still have not fired it, but I sure like the “package”. I thought the price was attractive when compared to other .308 platforms.

A military pedigree can be used and the final result crap, so that’s not a solid argument.

I don’t own a Sig 716 myself… one of my friends does and, I’ll have to admit… it’s pretty nice.

Much nicer than I thought it would be.

Now I’m kinda wishing I’d gotten one :slight_smile:

Paid $2k even before this. I had seen some as low as $1650 shipped on GB.
