Hi everyone. I only have experience with Colt’s M16A1 and A2 while in the Army. I want to buy an AR and the two best deals I can get are on the S&W M&P15 T and the Colt 6940 through our depts police supplier. Can’t seem to find any info on the S&W only the Colt. How do the two compare or should I be looking at Bravo Company? Thanks for any info.
I would get a colt over a Smith any day. The Smith isn’t a bad rifle and the one I had may years ago was ok.
Colt can be called the gold standard.

That really depends on what you need out of the rifle. Overall, the Colt is a better option, but I’d go with a SOCOM or a 6920 instead of the 6940 because of the monolithic upper.
A few differences off of the top of my head:
Colt has 4150 barrel steel; S&W has 4140.
Colt has 1/7 twist; S&W has 1/8.
Like I said, the Colt has a monolithic upper, which can be a good or a bad thing. You won’t be able to change out the rail if that’s your plan in the future. S&W’s upper isn’t monolithic.

This is a buyers market. THERE ARE A METRIC ASSLOAD of options right now. I wouldn’t want the 6940, but if I was FORCED to choose, I would take it.
I would buy a Colt 6920 over the 6940 any day.

No Its not for work. I’m buying it to shot when I want and as a home defense rifle.
Of the two options, I would go with the Colt all day everyday. Unless things have changed as of a coupe years ago when a friend of mine bought the exact Smith you mentioned the rail that they shipped with are UTG rails, which don’t inspire my confidence for a number of reasons. Also, Colt 6920s are popping up below $900 on a regular basis it seems, the 6970s are in the $800 range. No reason not to buy a Colt for a go to rifle unless you need the ability to mount stuff that a rail offers at which point I would be looking at a BCM or DD or other top line brand with a name brand, DD, Larue, BCM, Centurion, or the like rail to drop on a lower, or upgrading the Colt with a quality rail. Chances are though that for just mounting a light and sling a standard magpul foreend would be more than sufficient for a gross majority of set ups, but that is really another discussion for another time.
All I’m seeing is that “the S&W is good, but the Colt is better,” without any talk of accuracy, maintenance schedule or life span of major components to explain it.
I do however agree that the 6940 is a lot of $$$ for a little bit of gain when compared to the 6920 and 6720.

When you look at the rifle’s QA/QC, materials, and track record, then that’s all you really need to go by.
Ok. Colt does more testing and has more QA, as well as better parts. At least that was the case last I checked. I’m not going to list details as it’s been done in previous threads.
Accuracy is not usually the main selling point of an m4. Almost any ar with a tight bbl will post acceptable groups, and plenty of shitty ars post tight groups.
How about better QA/QC, accuracy, etc…? Guess how many times myself and others have seen S&W barrel nuts, not torqued properly? The 6940 is a tack driver and will outshoot an S&W any day of the week.
Alas, it will fall on deaf ears since you will poo poo anything Colt.

In the context of this conversation, that boils down to no experience required as long as you say the right things.
Nobody wants to talk about real world differences, just stuff they can read and repeat online. I’ve got about 14k through my two ARs, which cost me about $40 in preventative maintenance. That gives a different perspective than someone who has spent years reading about most of the stuff brought up in this thread.
And that’s a worthwhile point of discussion. I’m rarely “poo pooing” (your words, not mine) any specific gun. I just don’t see the value in people saying things without some type of experience behind it.
