I am looking to buy an msar , how do I tell if its a gen 4 and compatable with an
e4 stock?
If the stock uses a square shaped cross lock to hold the stock in, then it’s an E4. If the upper corners of the lock are rounded off, then it’s the older STG style. I understand that Ratworx will machine the Stg receiver square so you can convert it over to use the E4 stock for around 15.00 dollars. I also have heard you can convert over the Stg stock to the E4 by filing the corners on the stock square and then replace the lock with the square off version that is used on the E4 model.
The labeling of generations just sort of happened at the other big website. We made quite a few changes to our rifles as we went along and so “they” gave them different labels. It can get pretty confusing.
The rifles with square receiver locks (both STG’s and E4’s) are generally considered to be generation 4’s. But I think some folks call them gen 4’s if they don’t have a forward assist.
You can swap stocks between an E4 and a STG stock if they both have square locks or you can send your receiver to Ratworx for a very small modification. They do a great job on the mod and it does not void the warranty.
Are E4 stocks available and if yes what do they cost?
Here’s a video showing the difference:
