How Did You Mark Your Receiver for SBR

I found this thread https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=20663&highlight=Marking+receiver but it degenerated into a “Do I have to mark my receiver” argument. I am going to have my Receiver engraved on the front of the mag well at a trophy shop, per BATFE section 7.4 to .003" with my Initials city & state.

Without this degrading to a “Why Do It” thread please post pictures of the engraving “Marking” on your SBR receiver. I do understand that this is personal information and some may not want to post this in an open forum.

The local trophy shops here could not engrave deep enough for the BATFE requirement (or so they told me) so I sent mine to Orion Engraving. I sent Orion a design and he made nice work of it. I believe you will have to put your full name or at least first initial and last name(or name of your trust if you went that route), city, and state to be legal. Check over on the NFA forum for more. If I were to do over again I would just put my name, city, and state on the mag well front.

It saves having to ship out a lower receiver if you can get it done locally. If I build another SBR I will ship it to be engraved before submitting the Form 1. Can’t imagine the red tape if my lower was lost in shipping once the BATFE had processed that specific lower as an SBR.

I just went the Colt 6933 route so i didn’t have to mark it at all (and it wasn’t that expensive really)

I would really be cautious if your having the trophy shop do it. I would have them test an area first, like the area that the grip mounts on. That way if they cant your receiver wont have a visible blemish.

I tired having a local trophy shop do mine and it didn’t go so well. She was positive she could do aluminum no problem, well she couldn’t and ended up just messing up the anodizing.

I ended up just sending it to Orion which is what I wish I would have done in the first place. You know it will get done right with Orion versus a trophy shop that probably has never scene anodizing as strong like on a lower. I just used some aluma-black on my engraving and it worked great.

Does your laser etching meet the dept requirement? I’m just curious since I was told that laser etching didn’t meet the depth requirement. :confused:

Yes, Harford Engraving Services did mine. Some folks can do the deeper engraving. There’s a thread with some very elaborate and deep engraving done by Harford.

I had my first ones done at a trophy shop. They said it was a pain to do but had done quite a few over the years. Something about irregular shape of receiver was hard to set up. They did a great job though.

Thanks for the info on laser etching. I looked into getting a laser etching machine but couldn’t find one that would do the depth for markings. I’ll see if I can find out more from Harford.

I had a trophy shop do it, it looked perfect but I just couldn’t be sure if it was deep enough. I sent it out to Orion and now I can be sure it is legal. They marked it on the front of the magwell. Orion’s markings are really unobtrusive and they black it with alumablack. You wouldn’t even know it was there unless you looked for it.

Original trophy shop work - clean, neat and probably not deep enough. Cost me $35.

Orion Arms engraving on the front of the mag well. Unobtrusive, sharp and definitely within the regs. Cost me $51 plus $8 shipping.

I also went with Orion Arms (here’s the link to a previous post http://https://www.m4carbine.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=2197&d=1238326455 and not only is it clean, but I have yet to have anyone examining the SBR to even see it without me pointing it out.

I got it done last weekend. They used the diamond etching technique and it look great. A little alumablack and all is well. Had it done over the selector on the right side of the receiver.

I like your thinking I bought a factory LMT 10.5" SBR, no need to mark the reciver and it was no more expensive than an M4 LMT.

Mine was done on the front magwell. It was also done by Orion-Arms.

I’ve used a number of methods, from a dremil tool, to a set of letter punches, to using a local laser engraver (guess which one I’ll be using in the future).

If you hadn’t noticed, I prefer to engrave in a “visible” but out of the way place such as the bottom of the receiver on either side of the trigger.
