I’ll be picking up an LMT MWS in a few days and I plan on buying a 1-6x or 1-8x optic for it once I can come up with the cash.
The Blackbird II may make my short list, but I’d like to hear from any members with first-hand experience with one.
I’ve shot a few rounds through one. The glass was not very crisp or bright to my eyes. Even on full power, the Horus reticle is so small, it would be hard to accurately use IMO. It did seem to track correctly though. After being reminded below, I recall that statement in “green” being an issue with the Talon on 4 power with the H50 not the blackbird. My eyes may not be as good as ICANHITMAN’s.
For the money IMO a good deal. I have used a gen1 for many yrs, small & lightweight for the capability… 8x.
The genII has a red dot feature. Note the red dot will not necessarily line up with center reticle as it is 2ndFP. In practical use no matter.
It’s a FFP so I cannot imagine what anyone is commenting about regarding reticle size at max power. They are all approximately the same at same pwr ranges… FFP mil based reticle and all. I have a S&B 3-20x, Leupy 3-18x, leupy 1-8x, a gen1 and genII Blackbird.
BlackbirdII has a 30mm tube, and 20mm objective. It is certainly not S&B glass but is a fraction of the price and lighter weight.
How bright is the Gen 2 dot at 1x?
I am concerned that the mid-day desert sun might prove too much for the red dot.
Ran a Talon for a few years H25 grid was fully functional at 4x so at 8 I see no issue! Great scope, I have a Hawk as well.
I’m re-thinking, Maybe i need to spend some more time behine one again…
Haha thanks AZ-renegade for the bump. It was all crickets and tumbleweeds before you came along. I’m also interested in the brightness of the dot (Texas sun). The Short Dot, Z6i and Mark 6 are a bit outside of my price range.
Also, and Dano5326 and Steyrman13, is this pretty well constructed? I have some mild concerns since it is just a 1 year warranty, and I’ve read about spotty customer service. Lastly, is the eye relief from 1 to 8x a huge change?
Both the Blackbird II and Talon that the Instructor had had seen ALOT of use and didn’t have any issues with tracking. The magnification ring was still smooth. They felt like solid built optics. From what I understand, people see clarity/brightness in glass differently than each other. I would advise getting your hands on one outside if possible at bright daylight and at dusk setting to see if the glass would suit your needs. If you’re ordering online, that may not be possible though.
Based on my past experiences I will recommend them 100%, but the dot will not be daylight visible! Tracking is a not issue as well
The dot is not aimpoint/eotech bright. But has worked in many places I’ve been. Brightness is subjective… If really bright daylight one can use occluded front scope cap, and dot like an armson oeg.
The lower range is little used, I have always left on about 4x for FOV then flipped higher when needed.
This is not a precision optic (1000M+ or sub moa shot regardless of ambient conditions) but for me does very well to 800m. If you are used to long range optics, shooting to 1600 etc., the lack of parallax adjust will seem odd. But to me an ACOG w/o adjust is odd to me also, and people do fine with that.
Not sure of the construction or tracking. Not n engineer, can’t see inside it and never did “box drills” with any Horus. Being Horus, just zero’d once each time mounted and rarely spun dials inside of 1200m. The dials are covered and not quickly accessible.
I have smashed, deeply dented, one of the caps, lost the tactile clicks on that dial. Still zero’s and re-zero’s fine after 30k+ rounds on 7.62 & 5.56 carbines.
In short, I would highly recommend it. In the unlikely event ones skillset and equipment exceeds it, ($$ & time) you will change then & know exactly what you need.
