Hornaday brass "Training" 55gr SP

Hi all,
Been searching, but not able to find much on the terminal effects of this round. Everything I’ve found deals w/ accuracy or mentions it being steel cased (seems like that’s changed).

Found it at Dick’s initially, but online too after I checked. Kind of pricey at Dick’s, around $32/50 rounds.

Any idea if this is a good SD or hunting round? Being soft point, I’d assume it would have good expansion. Given the price, I’d hate to just sling it down range and kill paper.

Thanks.

Hornady loads that cannelured 55gr JSP in this sku and a few others. It’s a popular component bullet with reloaders, and several remanufacturers use it. I don’t remember if it came in their steel cases. I know the brass cased load you ask about is widely available and has been for some time.

It’s a rapid expander, penetration is shallow. Good for varmints and small game, small deer can be taken with good hits. Not recommended for them, though, as there are much better loads. Terminal ballistics approximate the Federal Power Shok 223A, T223, the Remington PSP (R223R1). Accuracy is good.

Dick’s pricing is out of line. The Hornady you ask about is available in stores and on the net from $23.99 and up. I believe it was Runnings that had 500rd cases of it for $239.99 or $249.99. Cabelas has a web sale price at $26.99, but it’s usually in stores $26.99-$29.99.

I bought a bunch here (after seeing Dick’s pricing)

Figured I’d ask, since it’s using the Hornady bullet. If it’s only a varmit round, that’s fine with me … I’m not really a hunter, and price was about the same as FMJ.
