Holster Options for SW686 SSR?

I posted this here instead of the gear/holster section, as I imagine our wheel-gun pro’s don’t often stray over there too much.

I am looking for a good leather holster for my 686 SSR 4". I need something that will conceal my pistol, either IWB or OWB, for hiking/camping and also trips into town. Kydex is a no go. I have never concealed a large revolver like this (cue the guys who say they conceal a bigger gun than that!), but I do carry AIWB daily, so a gun in my waistband is nothing new.

I like the looks of the Tucker Texas Heritage, the different Avenger style holsters, or the Lobo Offset Clip IWB holsters.

What do you guys use to conceal your 4" revolvers? What do you suggest for me?

I have carried 3 and 4 inch K frames IWB in a K&D Holsters IWB (I forget the name, they’ve gone out of business) and 3 and 4" N frames IWB in a Comp Tac CTAC (no longer made for any revolver except J frames).

Neither of them are particularly comfortable but they are tolerable. My experience carrying a CZ P01 in a TT Gunleather Reinforced IWB/OWB Convertible has made it my holster maker of choice and he does offer just about every one of his holster models for 2.3 and 3 inch L frames. A phone call is worth it to see if he will do one for a 4" L frame. I don’t see why not, but you may have to front the cost of a blue gun for him to mold/bone with.

I would stick with IWB holsters that have the loops/clips in front and behind the gun and absolutely avoid those with the loops/clips right over the cylinder. Way too much bulge.

For OWB, a simple pancake is the way to go. Lots of choices out there, but my bar none favorites are TT Gunleather and O’Rourke Leather.

Simply Rugged makes a good reliable pancake that will let you carry OWB, I have three and they protect both you and the gun well. I also have a DeSantis Speed Scabbard for my 4” 629 that makes it carrly like a much smaller revolver.

I have a pair of SSA revolver holsters from Jim Ryan, and they are superb.

I’m also a fan of Tucker and Byrd. I have two of their holsters for 1911’s. They have a shorter wait time than Jim does.

Their products look extremely familiar: https://tuckergunleather.com/

Maybe because they are related?

Found this on 1911 Forum…

I spoke w/ Charles Byrd today and found some more info on Tucker & Byrd. Apparently, Tucker sold Tucker Gunleather about 2 years ago to another party that kept the Tucker Gunleather brand. Since selling the company, Tucker and Byrd formed a partnership, creating Tucker & Byrd.

Thanks. That’s a much better explanation than the first one.

I kinda thought something like that was going on, but in the back of my mind there was a small suspicion of a straight up fake or imitation. Glad to see that’s not the case.

For the life of me, I could not find a custom holster that rode high enough and looked secure enough. So, I went with the production route and bought a Galco Fletch. It’[s surprisingly well made. The butt of the grip does tend to jab me in the ribs though, gotta get that figured out somehow.

Looks good to me, concealed carrying a 4” revolver is going to take some wardrobe adjustments. The FLETCH is an older established design.
I think you’ll be very happy together.
