Holster hight and cant for IDPA

Questions from a neophyte re IDPA legal holsters advantages and disadvantages:

  1. High ride, low ride or between those?

  2. Straight up, FBI [muzzle back] and muzzle forward?

  3. Front cut out to the extent legal - how much advantage?

  4. Thumb break, other retention, open?

  5. Preferred open front concealment garment?

Now this is just me but I run what I CC and wear garments that I would normally wear. I realize it is a competition but the added stress helps me to see what works and what may be a problem.

These answers are a combination of personal experience, and the rulebook. http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf

#1= Between those. Women are allowed to use dropped and offset, men are not.
#2= Muzzle forward is not an option. Run Neutral or “FBI cant” depending on what you like. I run neutral for IDPA, cant for CCW.
#3= Small advantage, but worth it. Any good kydex/polymer holster will probably already have this.
#4= Level 1 retention or “open”. But that’s personal preference.
#5= I tend to use the “IDPA Uniform” tac-vest. You can use anything, but the material should be slightly stiff. Very light stuff is kind of wispy. It’s easier to get caught during the draw.

Hope this helps.

Don’t overthink it at first. Just use what you have as long as it’s IDPA legal and go from there. You’ll find after a couple of matches and talking with a few folks that you’ll find your own preferences. It’s a great sport to grow/learn as you go.

Besides, once the timer goes off, everyone brain-farts half the stuff they’ve learned anyways.
