Holding the AR

After looking at so many pictures of people holding the AR, I seen no one who holds it like me. I hold the magazine housing with my left hand pulling it with my bicep to snug the butt against my shoulder. Since my elbow is under my left hand, I am not using as many muscles and can hold a very steady sight picture while standing, sitting or prone with less fatigue. Anyway, I am guessing there must be a reason why my hold is not acceptable, any comment.

Search for ‘magwell grip’ under the orange search button up there to the top right of the page.

If you’re actually holding the magazine proper to pull it in you’re definitely asking for problems at some point.
Resting on one periodically to use it like a monopod is one thing, but to be reefing on them all the time is not such a good plan.

Have you tried it when firing long strings rapid fire or when transitioning rapidly left to right/right to left?

OP: Holding the rifle the way you are creates a forward imbalance and does not help in muzzle rise management.

I recommend taking a look at this thread:

There is greater control with gripping as close to the bore as possible as well as further out. This includes recoil mitigation making follow up shots quicker or more accurate as well as how well the weapon is swung where there is greater control over stopping and starting.

Magwell grip is ok provided it is bulls eye style shooting where the target and you are in fixed positions and you can take your time for each shot. Once you have to move to transition to targets in different areas, shooting moving targets, moving yourself, have to get a quick and accurate followup shot then gripping further out and close to bore as possible becomes very important.

Digging around the Training and Tactics subforum wil also prove helpful.

This isn’t a technical question.
