And back to the HK 556. Any chance that HK will actually support the customer when it breaks?
At nearly $3k list price, you’d think, but history has proven that HK customers are kind of like dominatrix prostitute customers. They pay outlandish amounts of money to be abused by the person they paid it to.
I have read the review by SMG LEE on the 2 rifles. GREAT break down of the two. You really can’t go wrong with either. But I, Just like you drink the HK cool aid lol. For pistols I’ve owned a USPc .40, USP Tactical 45acp, and an HK45. I really want this rifle!!! If one is not in my possession by SHOT show, I will be in the MRP ranks!
I’d be game if they’d lighten up the overall weight a bit, and lower the price a tad. At that price I could pick of a really nice KAC SR-15 with full ambidextrous controls, top tier performance, and left over money for additional accessories.
Yeah talking to the HK rep he says that they are notorious on being way behind on actually releasing products. And don’t complain about the MSRP, HK was originally was trying to hit closer to the 4K mark instead of 3K, so count your blessings.
I think what he was referring to is that in Maryland any AR-15 type rifle is “regulated”, and subject to a 7 day waiting period. Colt HBAR type rifles are exempt, IIRC, and sold with a 4473/NICS check.
This is SOP for HK and if you read b/t the german lines…it reads, "our product will be the best in the world and so you should just shut up…stop bothering us and when its avail., be lucky if you even get one…HK out:D
HK does seem to have an affinity for the 3rd and 4th quarter of the year when it comes to getting product out. Guess we’ll see, but I wouldn’t bet the house that HK will be on target for 2010
As much as the MR556 has been delayed, I am wondering how long it’s going to be before the HK MR762 comes out. Now that’d be a sweet sweet rifle. However, it’ll probably use another proprietary magazine. Oh boy…now we’re going to have to have separate magazines for our SCAR 17s, MR762, and Knights SR25 or Larue OBR…they just need a standard 7.62x51 magazine.
That is retarded. I suppose this is to keep you from mounting an M203 (which every one has laying around along with HE rounds)? The HK416 with 14.5" barrel (which looks like an M4 barrel) isn’t even capable of mounting an M203.
Dustin
I’ve been following this thread and comments. I’m really quite baffled at some of them.
The MR556 is being in part produced in the US at Wilcox, same place where they are building their pistols. For HK, this is a departure from the past as all guns were built in Germany. Due to the barrel ban and to satisfy requirements that the next generation of 416’s to be tested for the new carbine program be made in the USA, they are all going to be built in the US.
Although it’s taken quite some time for these to come out, I don’t think it’s any surprise. As G3Kurz said so rightly on HKPRO, it would not be in HK’s interest to “rush” this rifle out only to find that there were problems. It would not only affect the MR556 but also would bleed into perceptions of the HK416. I’m sure there have been many iterations of this rifle built for T&E by HK so that they are confident that they will meet and exceed typical HK standards.
Do I have to remind people what happened when the SIG 556 came out? Or the current flap over the SIG 516?
Also, HK designers and engineers work on a wide platform of weapon systems, there’s not exactly a huge amount of personnel and talent to be dedicated just to this project.
Regarding HK-USA customer service, the general opinion is that it’s very much improved over the last few years.
The people snickering that it’s taken forever to get these guns out would probably be the same people who would jump at any opportunity if there were issues to bash HK.

would make sense but dont forget that the MR223 is available in EU since 2008 and the MR308 since this spring
Remember, they had to set up a manufacturing process here in the US. Add to that, negotiating German law that prevents some military technology to be exported out of the country.
Tell me about it…what I really like about MD is the Mag law. You can’t purchse/trade/transfer/sell mags over 20rds within the State. Yet you can own them…
HK MR556 is something I would like to add to my HK collection. Sure there are better alternatives in terms of availability and price but I like the fact that it says HK on the side so I’ll sip the Kool-aid and wait haha.
Maryland is worse than that. The “8 day” background check typically takes MSP longer than 8 days. technically - the FFL could release the gun to you on the 8th day WITHOUT a reply from MSP. None will.
Worse yet, when they get around to your “pistol papers” (for a rifle), they stamp them: “not DIS-approved!” Maryland is loath to (gasp) “approve” of any civilian owning firearms. They really are than anti-gun in my former home state.
MR556’s sold in the EU and Canada were manufactured in Germany. Assault rifles made in Germany can’t be imported into the US for civilian use.
In order to have MR556’s here, they need to be manufactured here in the US. Manufacturing technology exported from Germany in relation to some military technology is sometime prohibited by German law.
To say HK is not interested in the civilian market is just wrong.
