Hats off. You have the luck. Contrary to all I have ever heard. Not calling you out, at all, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
I recently had talk on mags with guy from unit that uses mostly HKs (suppressed HK416 10.4"). All that he had against HK mags (they have lot of those) was “heavy”. They had some function issues with E-mags, so they use now either HK mags or Lancers L5 AWM.
HK HRM mags are not top of the line those days (like they were 8 years ago), but those are not as bad mags as some want to believe. Of course unless someone puts “HK mag” sticker to every mag that is “black and steel”.
Assuming a total high cap magazine ban, I would imagine that in a few years those 50 HK mags will be able to fund a good portion of your retirement. They may or may not be worth it, but anything HK will command a price premium on top of that already huge premium for pre ban status. Just speculation of course, but we do have some history to go by.
Why would anyone use the HK mag when Lancers are cheaper and better.
As I mentioned in the original post, I have used one of these mags for @ the past 5 years, perhaps running a couple thousand rounds in it and no problems. I have some of the older Lancers and they seem fine as well, although I heard bug spray like Deet caused problems if you got some on the mag. The new Lancers look like something I’d like to try.
I am no champion for any specific brand of any mag, rifle, rail, etc. I have shot the AR platform for over 34 years, and I own Colts, LMT and have owned other brands, in addition to what I carried in the Army. If it will send rounds down range with reliability, I’ll use it.
The original Lancers did have issues with DEET, but their new ones fixed that.
To me the $33-$50 price for HK mags is insane. That is 3 opaqe Lancer AWM’s and 2 Translucent Lancers. Thy are also lighter…alo lighter and have the proper internal curve designed for the Taper of the 5.56, something Steel or aluminum mags cannot do.
At their cost I’m surprised anyone is still talking about them.
I own 20 of them. As others have posted, they are heavy, expensive and the feed lips can be damaged by dropping the mag on them, but unless the feed lips are damaged they work fine. They are a true 30 round mag, like the P-Mag, so you do not have to download them in order to seat them on a closed bolt.
FWIW I have some Korean-made copies of the HK mag. I don’t like how difficult it is to disassemble them but other than that and the weight they have been reliable for me. They are part of my “range only” pile however. I don’t remember where I got them.
I agree that for any tactical type of shooting, a mag that can’t survive being dropped on the feedlips due to it’s weight is not a good choice. However, I’m a civilian who treats any of my mags like an irreplaceable item and I’m not dropping them if I can avoid it. For reloads I remove it and replace it.
Even in the 22 years active duty I spent in the Army, I was never a tactical shooter. Started out with an MOS of 96 Bravo (Intel Analyst) with INSCOM looking at satellite photos after I got my commission and was recruited by the Pentagon for rotor school. They wanted intel officers to fly along the East German border in the early 1980s. Left Fort Meade for lovely Dothan, Alabama and nine months at Fort Rucker. Fun times!! Always carried a short Colt Carbine with me when the mission dictated.
Back to this subject, I bought the HK mags because they were unique. So far I’ve had good luck for the kind of shooting I’m doing on my ranch. No failures to feed with the one HK I’ve used. I have no reason to suspect that the rest of these mags I have stored would perform any less reliable. I also have plenty of Pmags, but the new Lancer AWMs look like something I would try as well.

Point taken, but I don’t think the US Government is prepared for the level of non-compliance to any future ban or confiscation schemes they enact. Laws that are illegal should be ignored. Here in rural New Mexico we are seeing plans for that kind of reaction. We are also lucky to have a pro-2nd Amendment governor, Susan Martinez, the first female Hispanic governor in America. She also carries a firearm on her person everwhere she travels. Our local County officials and State Reps from this district are also discussing plans fo non-compliance with any draconian, Constitution violating Federal gun laws.
