HK P30L vs. Beretta Px4 Storm

The difference in price between the HK P30L and the Beretta Px4 Storm (both 9mm) has me wondering if the HK is worth the price difference.

Of course, I’d love to shoot them both side by side . . . but that and my lottery winning probably will happen at the same time. If anyone knows where in south Florida I might do that, please let me know.

Meanwhile, any thoughts on this comparison will be appreciated. I am right handed and so any ambi- features are of not consequence to me.

You should do more homework on the PX4 (reliability issues…) before you buy one.

Thanks for the heads up. What ARE the reliability issues?

More like apples to kumquats, or porsche to yugo.

I’ve owned a P30 and shot the Beretta at the range…no disrespect intended, but they are not even in the same ballpark. You’d be better off considering an M&P or Glock over the Beretta 7 days a week.

Buy the M&P (L or Pro) 9mm from Grant, have him perform the Apex upgrades, buy a few spare mags and you’ll end up with a real shooter, have a better trigger/FCG that is more shootable and accurate as the HK.

Having had both, I am 100% M&P now (less a Robar custom HK45C).

Rotary barreled handguns have a well-earned reputation for locking up during cycling if they are not treated with kid gloves. As ToodG referred to in one of the linked threads, the guns sieze up so hard you actually have to beat it apart with a rubber mallet to clear up the problem, clean and lube the gun, and then resume firing.

That is unsatisfactory in a sidearm. There is a reason why most auto-pistols on the market are not rotary-barrel designs. Beretta’s compact PX4 isn’t even rotary barreled…because even they had to admit failure at some point.

The P30, on the other hand, is by all accounts a reliable and durable pistol that will likely serve you well. I prefer the LEM version myself, but to each his own.

Of those two buy the P30L. Hands down the best of the two.

Friends,

You have been most persuasive. The Px4 is now out.

I’ll be focusing on the HK P30L. Unfortunately, as of now, it’s available only in DA/SA w/decocker. That’s not unacceptable, but it would be better to have it in LEM V1 or V4 convertible more or less to V1.

The manual “safety” feature is not one I’d want.

Perhaps you should consider the standard P30. The extra barrel length doesn’t really buy you all that much in terms of performance.

They are available in V1 but in very limited quantities… Might be hard to find but they are on the market. Had a friend pick one up a couple weeks ago and word was that it was like shooting a 22… I carry a P30 and love it…

There are however other pistols that are less expensive that might also fit your needs. Take a gander at the M&P and a Glock. Great pistols at a great price.

I’ve thought of it, but I feel comfortable knowing that the barrel and sighting plane is that much longer. From everything I’ve studied, it does make a difference, and I’m OCD enough to care:D

I’ve been looking at those - and everything else. As I’ve posted above, I’m, uh, “somewhat” OCD, so I study hard before buying anything that important.

This is not even a question. HK.

That particular P30L V1 was an S model though.

Put an x300 on it, and it feels like you’re cheating.

Arizona shooting range aka Guns and Knives in Lauderdale Lakes has the HK p30 DA/SA for rent if you would like.

Im fairly certain they even have a pX4 for rent just in case you want to see for yourself how terrible they are.

Fan-frickin-tastic, Magz!!! THANKS for that! It’s not all that far away!

Now . . . to narrow down the discussion . . . after all is said and done, DA/SA or LEM?

Although I shot rifles, revolvers, pistols and shotguns a very, very, very long time ago, I’ve been a New England woods shotgunner for probably as long as most folks here have been alive. So, my instincts, muscle memory and skills are wired in for that kind of shooting. My shotgun stock was custom built to my specifications - drop at toe, drop at heel, cast off and cant (twist). Fits me like a glove. When I mount it, the gun points where I look. That’s the kind of shooting I’ve been doing for years - and I’m pretty good with that thing out to 30 yds. If that makes any difference to your advice, please let me know.

Whether or not you will like the LEM trigger will depend solely on you. You really do have to try it in order to figure out whether or not you would like that kind of firearm.

I liken firing an LEM trigger to shooting a revolver in double action albeit with a shorter reset.

I would steer clear of the DA/SA triggers because its two things to get accustomed to instead of one trigger press from start to finish.

Also, do NOT go into Arizona thinking you’re going to purchase a firearm there or remotely entertain the possibility of haggling with anyone. Their prices are astronomical, offensive really.

Use their store and range as a chance to dry fire and handle guns you’re interested in and the large selection of rental guns to actually live fire them.

EDIT:

Also, last but not least Arizona does not stock LEM equipped guns. In fact, i dont know of any retailers down here that do so you’re going to have to really look around in order to dry fire one. IF you’re looking to at least experience what the LEM trigger is like ask the generic question “do you have any HK’s with LEM triggers”, specifically looking for a p30 with that trigger setup is going to disappoint you.

I too was skeptical about the DA/SA trigger on the P30L, but I gotta say I absolutely love this gun, and the trigger does not bother me at all. Having been used to GLOCKS, shooting the HK was pure heaven!

Apparently, like many of the other questions we pose on this web site . . . YMMV. Right?

If P30L were readily available with LEM and DA/SA, this wouldn’t need to be such a problem. The problem is, the P30l is readily available with DA/SA and purtee durned near not available with LEM. So the question for me will be . . . wait it out, or just get one and get accustomed to it.
