I finally got the raw high speed video from my testing with the A5 buffer. I gave it to thefirearmblog to post first but it’s on YouTube.
I tested a lot of buffers and combinations but only ended up saving a couple captures and this was the best, it plays twice in the video, towards the end. Easily enough to say there was ZERO bolt bounce on the A5 and a noticeable amount on the H1 buffer.
I sort of wonder if bolt bounce could cause a little bit of extra wear because the carrier/cam/bolt slide against the same metal a couple times compared to once and stopped with an A5 or A2 buffer.
There is also a clip at the end of a 338RCM AR-10 where you get watch the gas stream from the carrier for an instant.
Last time I posted a link to thefirearmblog some mod told me promoting “MY” website was against the rules… I have nothing to do with them other than I contribute now and then. But whatever, a mod has spoken, blessed be their words I guess.
I do some independent consulting for Proof, but I would recommend precision guys watch them closely. For the most part just a normal dude.
Um, yea, tons of stuff learned that day. I was mostly figuring out what frame rate to use on what motion object. Later in the day we loaded a 300wm a little slower and got a great capture of the bullet spinning in air, but it would have taken an hour to dump that footage from the camera. I’m going to do more with cyclic testing on the A5 and I’d like to do a head to head or split screen with a carbine buffer as well.
It’s a balance between available light, frame rate, and capture size so a lot of these could have been slightly better. One interesting note, those muzzle brake shots that are slowest and look dark were taken in broad daylight with two giant led lamps fixed on the muzzle, comes out looking like night.
I’ll try that next time but its actually sort of hard because zoomed in on the action, it’s hard to trigger the camera at the trigger pull. I have a trigger input on the camera but best would be to tie in a sound meter I think, ah but then the camera’s software isn’t exactly set up for that. I’ll think about it. Best for casual use would be to use a wide lense to see the trigger and/or muzzle. I suppose I could also cut an upper to see the firing pin being hit, that’s going beyondy casual testing, I’ll have to see what Proof has planned.
