High Protein Diet

I think Will is right from what I read its very serious and could lead to organ failure if not handled right.

That’s completely incorrect. There is ZERO evidence that a high protein diet harms a healthy kidney.

Please see my article here: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/layne38.htm that is fully referenced

as well as my video log here on protein myths: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjmV8BlsJTQ

Unless research has shown otherwise be very careful eating soy proteins as they convert at a higher rate to estrogen= gynocamastia.

yes it would take alot, but I’d rather start with a proper solid base then have questions later.

I also find myself eating “around” dishes. Taco night can be done with the help of tupperware.

I believe I said liver, is that what you meant? Also he is not healthy

I like variety. So i buy and cook eggs, red meats, chicken, seafood like salmon, tilapia, squid, clams, etc…

Some are better than others, but I love me a wide variety of flavors and textures.

My robot detector is flashing

Im sorry…what? Please tell me you’re a robot…

Someone define a high protein diet please…

I don’t really go full nerd with nutrition but…

For me high protein means eating as much or more protein compared to my carbs + a little fat from the meat itself, fish oil, nuts, etc…

For my purposes (eating for weightlifting/strength) generally every meal I try for 40% protein source + 40% carbs + 20%* fat.

*depends on type of fat. I get some inevitably from most of the meats so must factor that in…

And less carbs towards bedtime usually, though nothing is really that precise with my diet, especially when I hunger for a burger. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not very refined I’ll admit, but it works for me as my job is pretty physical and I seem to be recovering and progressing without gaining much fat (actually getting leaner since I dumped the 5-3-1 and took up oly lifts and squatting twice a week).

May not work for you depending on daily activity levels, metabolism, fitness goals, etc…

Couldn’t resist posting pics of last weekend’s BBQ fest at my place…

I can put 3lbs of taco meat in one Tupperware container. When I make burritos I place one tortilla on top of the package of the rest of the tortillas and roll it up on there. No plate needed. Then pop the lid on the Tupperware when and in the fridge it goes. 1 pan, 1 Tupperware, 1 spoon nice and easy. This feels like the how to eat in college thread now.

The diet I’m on now:
Assault Phase : protein and non-fat dairy 1 tablespoon of oat bran a day
no starches no sweets of any kind
3-10 days based on how much weight you want to lose. I did 10 days and lost 13 pounds.

Cruise : 1:1 ratio of asssault style days to days where you can have non starch veggies. I do a 3:1 ratio here, or try to, most weeks it’s more of a 2:1 ratio, assault to cruise days. only starch allowed is 2 tablespoons of oat bran a day.

Do this for 3 days for every pound you desire to lose.

Consolidation : Add fruits, still maintain 1 pure assault day per week, everything else is the same as cruise. Can have 1 “cheat” day per 7 day period. Do this for 5 days for every pound lost.

I’m at the tail end of week 6 and have lost 27 pounds. From 265 to 238. I’ve been running and lifting 3-4 days a week in conjunction with this as well.

I used to eat bread and carbs like a fiend, but this diet hasn’t been too difficult for me, as it is easy to see that it is working.

About eight months ago i switched to a 40/40/20 split, protein, fats, carbs.

I have no idea if this is ideal but it seems to be working for me. I no longer crash when i eat, ie get the “itis” and i am making progressive strength gains, not as much as i would like but still gaining.

I have also been attempting a body recomposition style of program where on heavy lift days i eat a surplus of 300 and on non lifting days a deficit of 300. At the end of the week i am still in the negatives so i can continue burning fat.

I tend to eat a ton of chicken breast, lean pork, lean red meats, 93/7 ground beef, lots of fish, mainly tilapia since its cheap, canned tuna no more than twice a week and a boat load of eggs and egg whites. I also supplement with whey protein to hit my target macro ratios as i find eating that much food to be rather difficult, especially without calorie dense carbs…or should i say carbs that are easy to gorge on.

I would say a ratio like the above is a “High protein” diet but Buck Yeager recommends three grams of protein per pound of body weight so i might be off… :stuck_out_tongue:

Out of curiosity, why are you looking to avoid protein shakes? The reason I ask is because if you simply don’t like the taste, it’s worth just sucking it up and dealing with it. I hate the taste, but I drink them for a couple of reasons. They’re about the cheapest source of protein, and whey is about the most complete proteins you can find. If you’re worried about the high cholesterol content, you can get “whey isolate” instead of “whey concentrate.” I prefer the isolate for this reason, even though you lose out on some of the other nutrients that accompany the cholesterol in the whey concentrate.

3g protein per lb of bodyweight is absolutely absurd. Hell 2g per pound is absurd. 3g per lb is just asinine.

1g per lb is plenty, if you really like more protein then 1.25-1.5g/lb have been shown to be perfectly safe, albeit not more anabolic than 1g/lb.

Unfortunately, nutrition is a science where anyone can all themselves an ‘expert’ and typically those who do call themselves that, aren’t.

I’d very much recommend checking out my website, as well as my video logs on nutrition www.youtube.com/biolayne as well as the following people:

-Alan Aragon
-Jacob and Gabriel Wilson
-Brad Schoenfeld
-Will Brink (but you guys already know him)

All of those guys are very science based.

I’d also recommend a new podcast that Dr. Wilson and I are hosting called ‘muscle college’ radio if you really want a bit more detail about training & nutrition: http://rxmuscle.com/2013-01-11-01-57-36/muscle-college/7426-muscle-college-1-26-13.html?hitcount=0

hope this is helpful

Never met anyone actually eating that much protein. Hmmm. :help:

How could you even be in a deficit with 3 grams per pound?

That there 90% protein diet? :bad:

I dont know. Ask Buck Yeager…

I was being sarcastic if you didnt catch that. I eat 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound of LBM to hit my calorie requirements.

yes I meant liver (kidney too for that matter)

what ailment does he have?
