High Caliber's new Recce rifle.....

I mentioned earlier in my Battle for Light Precision Supremacy thread that if I were gonna stray away from the MRP stretch chassis/Rock 5R Recce that I already currently own, I would go with the HCS Recce upper/rifle given their pedigree, actual parts and assembly used to construct them, and ultimately their commitment to these specific NSWC-Crane type builds.

If there ever was a “real” Recce rifle, this one is it. Here are a couple of reasons why I feel this is the real life embodiment of the Crane Recce rifle:

1.) At it’s core it uses a Douglas barrel. For those that don’t know, the Douglas barrels are the actual ones currently used and bought by SOCOM for the MK 12 rifles. The ones HCS receives are identical to the ones that currently go into the MK12s and are made on the same machines by the same people. This fact alone makes their MK12 and now Recce rifle very unique, extremely rare, and super true to form.

2.) The gentlemen who make up the HCS outfit:

Kevin Oneill much like myself, is a true student of these rifles and is extremely passionate about learning and understanding all there is to know about them. I would consider him easily to be one of the foremost experts on the MK12 and Recce rifles currently. His commitment to building these rifles as closely to their original specs and designs, and then making them available for U.S. civilians for purchase is a huge part of what makes these uppers/rifles very unique and special.

Alan Brown is the actual gunsmith at HCS and he brings to the table a 20+ yr career of service with NSWC Crane in small arms development(weapons prototype shop). He was actually involved in the design, development, and testing of many of the weapons that are now so popular like the MK12, MK13, MK18, SCAR, and now the Recce rifle concept that spun from the original Special Purpose Receiver program. Along with those weapons, he also worked to develop MK262 ammo.

The reason I’m posting this is totally on my own behalf, as many already know I’m extremely passionate about these particular types of rifles. In a world where the term SPR, MK12, and certainly Recce get thrown around so generically, the HCS uppers/rifles are a huge breath of fresh air as they are bringing legitimacy to these particular rifles and their original designs and specs that I have grown to love so much. Essentially they are defining the terms that are so often misused not only by individuals but even major manufactures as well. There are indeed actual roots, designs, and specs behind the terms SPR, MK12, and Recce, contrary to what some may believe. Kevin and Alan at HCS are bringing those actual designs, and specs to bear in their current MK12 and Recce offerings and I truly believe this should be applauded and respected by the AR community.

I will include a quote from Kevin that I received in an email reply after asking permission to share his Recce and company details with M4C that I believe sums up exactly what I think is so very unique and special about the uppers/rifles they offer…

“We are very interested in continuing to honor the programs developed while Alan was at Crane. He learned a lot on Uncle Sam’s dime – studies were done that we could never afford to duplicate and that info goes into what he builds. We wish to continue to apply those lessons to anything else we add our name to.”

So in summery, if your ever interested in owning either a Recce or MK12 rifle in the future, I strongly recommend seriously considering the uppers/rifles of High Caliber Sales, they are extremely nice and approachable, and very much willing to listen to the customer’s needs and wants in a future rifle. Unlike buying a rifle from a major outfit like LMT, KAC, BCM, Colt, Noveske, etc., with HCS you get one on one attention from Kevin, and you can be assured your rifle is being built methodically by hand by arguably the person who knows best how to build these particular types of rifles.

Here is Kevin’s personal Recce he just finished up after making several already for customers…

Note: They will make small changes per individual customer request like use different muzzle devices depending on what the customer needs are. So while much of the below spec list is what makes up every HCS Recce upper, they can be slightly tailored to each individual and their specific needs.

SPECS:
Specs – mil spec receiver; LMT bolt and bcg; PRI gasbuster CH; Douglas premium stainless barrel with 1:7 twist; barrel ext with M4 feed ramps; BadgerOrd Crane style low profile gas blk; mid length gas tube from LMT; OpsInc 12th model collar and brake; KAC URX III rail with integral front buis; KAC 200-600 meter rear buis; BFG Vicker’s sling; Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24 with BRT reticle. Upper is mounted on a KAC SR15 lower with SOPMOD stock.

Call me salty, but I wasn’t impressed by their website’s low res pictures. It appears on one of their build photos there were vice jaw marks on an upper, but I wasn’t certain of it. I enjoy building rifles so it’s not like I would have paid someone else to take the fun out of recreating a replica, anyway. Kevin indicated he would have built the rifle with parts supplied by the customer, as well.

I chose to source a barrel from them. I can’t report out on it’s accuracy as I haven’t built the rifle yet, but make sure to specify you want detents drilled out if you’re doing a mod0. I believe what he has in stock has detents for the mod1 gas blocks. Kevin was very helpful and informative.

I can upload detailed photos of the crown / profiling work his machinist completed if anyone is interested. The finish on the barrel is up to my standards. Thus far I’m satisfied.

I went with the Centurion 16". I believe it’s a Douglas since both sites list identical price, descriptions and specs.

I’m definitely more interested than this upper now than their MK12. I was originally going to piece together the SEAL recce rifle with a Lilja bbl, 12.0 LaRue, and NFO scope but I think getting one professionally build already might be a better way to go for me.

Trident, please fix your pics.

whats wrong with them? on my screen nothing appears to be wrong.

just send me that lilja bbl. if you decide to roll with this new badass Recce from HCS;)

part of the large appeal of this new Recce for myself is having Alan one off build it.

eta…here is some further reading on this new HCS Recce

The pics aren’t showing up for me either. You should try to upload them to imgur.com or something. It seems the pics are linked from a gmail account that’s probably cached just on your PC.

Back to the main point…I’m still really undecided on how I want my recce clone to be, but I am surely going to have to get one soon.

The pictures below were what I originally wanted to duplicate, but with this new recce offering from HCS, I’m torn.

kmrtsn/Bowser…I went ahead and saved the pics in my photobucket account and then added them to the thread that way. Hopefully that helps:)

here are some more pics that I figured I would add as well…

**** All pictures belong to Kevin Oneill

Trident, would you mind addressing the following when you get a chance? I asked in this thread-http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=91904&page=3 but you may have unsubscribed to that one so I’m putting it here but there seems to be a rather large discrepancy regarding Alan Brown’s tenure at Crane.

I’ll contact Kevin.

ETA…can anybody see the pictures now?

all the pics look fine to me. nice rifle

Look you don’t have to address anything. I just thought you would want to considering you took the time to ornately promote a company and then someone who I’ve always though of as a no nonsense, knowledgeable member, challenged the reputation of someone you vouched for, that’s all.

I’ll be honest though, after reading your OP with quotes like “the HCS uppers/rifles are a huge breath of fresh air as they are bringing legitimacy to these particular rifles and their original designs and specs” I had no choice to be a little befuddle since the reality is Monty brought legitimacy to these types of rifles by bringing true to spec mk12s to market over 3 years ago.

There is obviously no denying the quality of HCS’s builds as evidence by the components used, and I’m not writing them off, I’m just a little leery currently based on some of your comments and another members allegation.

Thanks pal for letting me know…glad they are showing up:)

I wish like hell that was my personal rifle, that bad boy belongs to Kevin Oneill.

The barrels HCS uses are the same Centurion uses which are Douglas button rifled. They are profiled and chambered in a spec you will have no issues with regarding to functionality or accuracy.

Trident, I actually went and bought one many, many months ago from Kevin, I liked it so much I had him do a custom 6.8! I have a BCM Mark 12 Mod 0, I’m really thinking hard of having Kevin do a rebarrel on, as imo thats the only thing different is now its a BCM SS barrel, and HCS, would be installing a Douglass.

does anybody have a website link?

Here ya go brother…

mstennes…thanks for weighing in, I was hoping you would as I remember you being perhaps the first official buyer of the new HCS Recce upper.

I’d really love to hear your thoughts on it if you could elaborate some, and a range report or two would be really fantastic to see. If you want to go for the full win…post up some Recce porn:cool:

Trident,
I will take some pictures in the morning on post them of both the 6.8 and the 556. Thier both identicle except caliber, and flash hiders, I have a 12th model in 556 so its running the OPS, and being cheap, I went with a AAC brakeout for the 6.8 since I have a 762SD. I have not had time to really punch a bunch of targets with either, but I did do the 556 for two 5 shot groups, and rang our gong at 600 yards consistanly, I figured its not a paper puncher, but my truck/yote rifle so once it was sighted in, it will out shoot me though, I will look around for the test target also, and to be honest, I cant remember what the spread measured. The 6.8’ has only been sighted in, then put back in the safe as when it arrived I was in harvest so I didnt have time to really have fun with it.

Very cool news from HCS…

HCS sold 8 MK12’s to a movie supply company in CA for use in the upcoming film of “Lone Survivor”.

“The MOD1 – Independent Studio Services presented several to a retired mil tech panel for review; got their approval and ordered the rest. 6 are fully functional and 2 have solid barrels.” Quote from Kevin.

Congrats HCS

Yep. Monte has been offering this barrel for a long while now. Don’t think you can go wrong with Centurion or HCS, but these aren’t exactly earth shattering new builds. Nice for sure, but not revolutionary.
