Hey guys,

I have been reading here for a while, but just registered. I’m new to the world of ARs, having just bought my first rifle a few months ago. I got a bunch of good info from you guys. I’ll admit to also using “TOS,” but y’all seem to take your rifles a little more seriously over here. Here is my rifle; I’m glad to hear any suggestions and/or comments.

It is a Bushmaster 16" carbine. I have put about 800 rounds through it so far, with no problems:

I know, I know, it’s a BM, which some of you are not fond of. I did find the “Help, I bought a BM before I knew better” thread, so I followed the advice there. I added an H buffer:

I also staked the castle nut at three places:

I installed a BCM extractor upgrade kit, but don’t have pictures of that. I also staked the gas key after assuring it was torqued correctly. This is my first attempt at this, so let me know what you think:

I added a Surefire M73 rail, a Surefire X300 Weaponlight, and a TangoDown VFG:

I decided on an ACOG. I first tried one of the 4x RCOs, but the short eye relief wasn’t working for me, so I went with this one. It is one of the compact 1.5x24 models. I really like it. I think it is a good compromise between the 4x models and a red dot.

did you replace the front sight with a taller one?

No, I didn’t, but I was able to sight it in using the original FSB and BUIS without a problem. Obviously, it doesn’t co-witness with the 1.5x ACOG, so there were no issues there either.

I wasn’t sure if the 1.5x magnification would be enough to make the FSB disappear, but that hasn’t been a problem either. With the LaRue mount, I can see some ghosting of the FSB in about the lower 1/3 of the sight picture, but it isn’t distractiong, and I barely notice it when shooting.

How far are the irons zeroed. most A2 front sight base won’t zero to 50yards. for a flat top you need an F front sight Base. it’s a little bit taller. this is used by flat top uppers.

When I first got the rifle, I zero’d at 100 yards with the irons. I have since put on the optic and it is zero’d at 50 yards. Really, I haven’t thought much about the irons since I put on the ACOG. I’ll go back, take off the ACOG, and look at that a little closer. Thanks for the tip!

Irons are zeroed at 50yards. It will be zero again @approx 200 meters. anything in between you’ll be shooting max 2in high. @25yards it’ll be 1.5in low.

basically. if you shoot a man size target point blank up to 200meters. your shots will hit be just around a 2in up or 2 in down. nice huh?

nice acog though. I have an aimpoint. but would like an acog too… just don’t have the funds yet.

This is actually one of the more decent BMs I’ve seen. Looks like you hit all of the major problem areas that make these things unreliable. Now all you need to do is get a real weapons light (Surefire 952, or similar) and you’ll have a pretty sweat setup.

Great job on staking that castle nut too, looks like you really did a great job.

The X300 is more than enough light for a carbine setup. I think many carbine users go overboard when it comes to weapon lights.

Unless this particular model is different from others, if you zeroed an ACOG @ 50yds, then your bullet drop compensator is going to be waaaaaayyyyy off. That’s also based on whether or not you care, though, and if you have the distance to do 100m like they’re designed for. You can do a 36yd (33m) zero using the 300m aimpoint on the BDC that will basically dial you in, but confirming @ 100m is required for your BDC to be fully accurate. Otherwise, your trend will be to print low by as much as 2" @ 100m, without taking some other variables into account.

I had a Bushy, too, up until very recently, and I did all the stuff you have. It ate over 5000 rounds with no problems.

The idea that an X300 isn’t enough weapon light for a carbine…suffice to say that that’s a narrow perspective. You’re good in that arena.

If it doesn’t fell like you’re being X-rayed when I light you up, then it’s not enough light. :smiley:

I think that the X300 is more than enough to get the blinding effect on an individual (trust me from personal experience in force-on-force training).

But as Christopher Walken said “I have a fever and the only prescription is more…” :cool:

X300 is almost as bight as a scout light (10 less lumens) for half the cost. I personally consider them a very viable alternative. And they WILL blind your ass.

The Compact ACOG’s do not have BDC reticles. I zero mine at 50yds as well.

ETA - the TA33 does, I always seem to forget that one!
