Has any company tried this with a self loader? Unless there is something I am missing (decent chance there) this seems to be a way to produce precision lock up relatively cheap.

That’s ingenious.
Ingenious, but having used similar systems in many applications, they better be stainless and they’d better be hard. I know they may not be built to the same standards, but this is similar to the system that makes up a quick disconnect air chuck or pressure washer chuck. They work, but I also go through them regularly. Balls in recesses do NOT like dirt or corrosion one bit.
The MG 42 and postwar MG 3 machineguns are roller locked, recoil operated (not delayed blowback) designs. Rollers instead of ball bearings but otherwise the same concept. The VZ 52 pistol uses the same design.
The CETME, G3 and HK series are of course roller-delayed blowback - somewhat different.

Been a long time since I have used an air tool that needed lube, but I don’t remember lubing the QD chucks so maybe lube on a rifle bolt might overcome the grit issue?
I was thinking ball bearings should be pretty hard and incredibly mass produced so that coupled with drilling holes versus milling flats would seem to be an incredibly fast and cheap way to get a bolt. Of course the concept seems to be done by only one company that appears to make really high end sporters (with no MSRP I can find) may mean the looks to be cheap and fast is a very naive thought.
The cost of producing the tolerances required would offset the savings. The dimension changes from heat in a full or semi-auto weapon would also be greater than experienced in a bolt action sporter. Last but not least, re-assembly would need to be truly foolproof to prevent catastrophic events.
The Heym is awesome, though.

They don’t seem relatively cheap. GunBroker has a few listed for $4000.
I will add this rifle to my “Guns I Will Buy the Day After I win the Powerball” list.
Looking at the fancied up aspects I didn’t expect Heym to be. Looked and their 3 lug turn bolt SR21 is in the same price range so the cost isn’t just lockup.
