Anyone know the outside diameter of those surplus 2.5x Hensoldt magnifiers?
I believe it is the same as the Aimpoint magnifier. The Po-Boy special used the Larue LT-649.

Hensolt / LaRue “PoBoy Special” includes a spacer that is not needed with the Aimpoint 3x/LT mount combo.
I just measured with my digital calipers (with badly fading battery) and got a shade over 1".

LT has had issues getting them at times, but hadn’t heard that they were all gone. You may want to check with LaRue.
Have to admit that it works pretty well. I had both the Aimpoint and the Hensolt and sold the Aimpoint…for what it’s supposed to do, the Hensoldt does it at a very attractive price point. I would think that the Aimpoint would be more durable, however.

I recently picked one up from Cheaper Than Dirt. Still had the range finding reticle, but the glass is flawless. The body is a bit over 1". I bought some 30mm to 1" shims and had to sand them to get everything to fit. I ended up having to get longer bolts for the LT-649 in order for it to clamp the sight.

Larue no longer sells the magnifiers. The magnifiers are still available from Cheaper than Dirt. The reticles can be removed. Larue had thiers purged with nitrogen. I wish they would get some more.
No problem…and thanks for reminding me why I like the Hensolt and the spacer.
With the Hensolt/spacer, you can adjust the distance between the magnifier and the optic. As a number of people have pointed out, magnifiers can work better (clearer, crisper, dot) when mounted as close to the optic as possible.
Being cross-dominant (right-hand/left-eye), I run the LT mount bass-ackwards, and push in/pivot left when not using. The Hensolt/spacer setup allowed me to mount the magnifer closer to the optic (have used with M3, M4, and T1) than I could the Aimpoint 3x, and optimize my setup. The T1 was especially sensitive to dot-distortion until I moved the Hensolt as close as possible.

Thanks guys! If ever I get one, any idea for an inexpensive mount for them that is the right height for a 512, absolute co-witness height? I’m still evaluating the concept and will get better stuff if it works for me.
does anyone know how to remove the range finding reticule? i’m about to pull the trigger on one of these from cheaper than dirt. also is the big eyepiece removable/ necessary ?
I saw an article somewhere on removing the reticle. Entirely user doable. I’m trying to remember where I read that.
I compared the pics of La Rue’s finished product to the Cheaper than Dirt base model and it seems La Rue cuts off almost half of the eyepiece.
thanks glen, after a 2nd look it does look like larue just took a razor and sliced off the eye cup. if anyone does know how or where to find the article about the reticle removal i’d appreciate it, i’ve searched quite a bit and come up empty handed.
This page has a whole buncha companies that can scrub that reticle and repurge it.
There is a detailed post of it on AR15.com. I did it and it is very easy to do. I did not purge my scope as fogging isn’t a problem here in AZ for the most part. Not to metion it is going on a play gun.
Be careful with the pliers. I squeezed a tad to hard and it dented the rear lens retainer. It still works, but there are plier marks on it. Considering it was $20 shipped from CTD, it isn’t a big deal. But don’t repeat my mistake if you can avoid it. Also note, the version from CTD have a window for an illuminator. It doesn’t really affect anything, but there is no need for it.
thanks yellow carbon!!! just recieved my hensoldt yesterday and i’m gonna give give the removale a try. the quality is fantastic on this thing seems very solid, i cant imagine spending $500 bucks for a brand name one
Just an FYI - CTD is sold out, and I found a seller on eBay with 3 for $14.95 ea (Buy it Now). He had 5, but I just bought 2. 
There’s one more BiN priced at $50 and another at $54.37.
Hope some of you guys picked these up. I just found one listed with the LaRue mount and spacers at $200, one at $26.01, and one at $40.
Cheaper Than Dirt doesn’t have them anymore. I just looked 5 min. ago.
