Help with Springfield Loaded Complete Disassemble

I’m doing a complete disassemble on my Springfield Loaded and…

I can not figure out how to get the left side of the thumb safety out of the darn thing.

I’ve removed the mainspring housing, got that all taken down/out, got the right side of the ambi safety out but can’t get the other side out.

Would appreciate some help, and … most of all a video showing somebody doing a complete disassemble on the Loaded.

Thanks.

Thumb safety comes out in between safe and fire. You push up around the middle of its travel and wiggle it till it slides out. The lug on the inside of the safety fits through a window in the frame for assembly and dissassembly. Thats what your trying to find when wiggling in the middle position. Go to youtube and type in 1911 dissassembly.

I’ve already been to YouTube looking for videos on how to remove the ambi safety … no dice.

Should I not have removed the mainspring first before trying to remove the safeties?

good to learn these things on a gun like the Loaded, instead of a full-house custom that you dropped serious coin on.

do you have the hammer cocked?

No, the hammer is not cocked because the mainspring housing is out, the hammer is loose.

OK, the hammer now is cocked, somehow I managed to do that, so now the safety moves fully up and down, and I have it in the half way position and…can’t get it to come out.

I tried using the right safety switch as a sort of punch to help push it out, won’t budget.

I just tried using a punch, and it won’t budge.

To say I’m a tad frustrated is an understatement.

Success!

Finally got the hammer back, the grip safety just right and moved the right side safety up/down while holding on to it pulling out and…it was a bugger to get out…but finally out it came and the rest of the parts nearly fell out of the pistol with a few pin pushes here and there. And, yes, that’s the FLGR stuff in the upper right corner of the cloth. I replaced it with the standard guide rod and plunger system, as you can see.

Results:

1911s are easy to take apart… Just start pushin out those pins :sarcastic:

Mission accomplished…got my Wilson MSH, with a maxiwell and put the whole thing back together.

And it went bang just fine too.

Looks good.

Good job.

other than replacing a broken part or “upgrading” (I use this term with some hesitation!) a part, unless you fall into a swamp carrying your 1911 you’ll never need to detail strip for routine care. Many USGI guns were carried in some of the worst environments possible without ever being detail stripped for decades.

But what if I enjoy making my 1911 squeaky clean? Well, not literally squeaky, I do give everything a very light coat of Ballistol.
