Help me pick a 9mm

Hey guys,

I am soliciting advice from everyone I know, from my father to my YouTube heroes (I’m looking at your Mike Jones).

I fixed up and sold a couple of my surplus FEG hi power clones. I wanted something a big more reliable (not that the FEGS weren’t after I fixed the issues, but I got kind of sick of looking at them).

I currently do not own a 9mm. I have my 1911 and that’s it for handguns. Gimme your best, all-around recommendation.

I have shot a glock only once in my life and wasn’t a fan, but I could be converted I suppose.

I have $550 to spend, but could stretch it out to $600.

Edit: Just more info, that I should have added originally.

I don’t have any specific requirements for the pistol.
I am familiar with DA/SA and SAO, but not the characteristics of a striker fired gun.
As it stands, I don’t carry but that will change.
I really just want an all-around gun. Carry, range, HW, etc.

That’s a broad question. You need to figure out some of the things you desire, such as SA/DA or striker fired…Polymer or metal…full size or sub compact…Applications for the gun: carry, home defense or range toy?..etc…

Once you have all of this settled, go to a gun store or show and try to get a feel for all of them. Even better if you can shoot some of them before you decide.

Ultimately the only one who can decide is you. You know what you like or dislike, you will discover what shoots best for you. There is no one size fits all 9mm.

I have my favorites and preferences, but you may hate my choices. The upside is there are a ton of options out there today and plenty of them, if not most of them, are very good.

Happy searching!

Glock 19
CZ P07
Sig 2022
M&P2.0
Shield

I’m no expert with a pistol, far from it. That being said I like my Glock 19 gen 4 and shoot it well. I really like the 19x and new G45 also. The extra grip area with the 19 slide is a good combo.

Glock 19 MOS or Glock 45. If you absolutely can’t find a way to like the Glocks, then S&W M&P 2.0C 9mm. Or however the f it’s written.

Get a Glock 17 or 19. Shoot it till you get used to it. If you don’t like it, sell it.

I forced myself to like it because I shot it better than the M&P.

CZ P07/09

I really like my CZ P07 if you are ok with DA/SA. The P09 would also be an option, but is larger. Both well within your price range

Other Options:
Glock
Walther PPQ- Nicest trigger i have used on striker gun
HK VP9
SW MP 2
CZ 75 an variants
Berreta 92/APX
FN 509

Depends on your requirements, but all capable options to look into. I have not been impressed with Sig as of late and would personally avoid them

What is this for?
Range gun, competition, general carry?
Is your goal to have a pistol, or to be excellent at pistol shooting?

Without more info, my general answer is to get a g17/19, m&p 2.0 fs/compact, sig 320, CZ, walther ppq, or hk p30/vp9.
Any of the above should be reliable. I chose glock for support reasons. Pick one and wear it out.

Thanks everybody, it seems like there are bunch of good choices.

I want to get a gun that I can become excellent with and use it for self-defense. Thanks Mega.

S&W M&P 2.0… great gun.

I’m in the camp with either Glock or Smith.

I am really liking my 19X, have only put a couple hundred through it, but it is the most accurate stock Glock I’ve had.

I also really like my M&P 2.0 5 inch. I have over 5,000 rounds through it and haven’t had a lick of problem, other than the hard to activate slide catch which I fixed.

I’d choose on of those simply because they are mainstream brands and support is everywhere.

Personally, I’d go with the Glock 19X.

If you’re already a 1911 guy, why not get another 1911??

As you can see by all the previous posts, few Glock 19/17 fans on the forum. They have a hard earned reputation for always going bang when you need it. Light and do very well for a CCW pistol. However you mentioned that you had shot them and was not a big fan ( your not alone, lots of folks don’t like to shoot the Glocks.) For that reason I would take a look at the M&P9 2.0 or for a little more coin maybe a Sig P320. I am old school so i still prefer DA pistols for SD, and the P229 was a good size and weight for me. But those are probably in the $700-$800 dollar range for a lightly used P229 in 9mm.

Gen 5 Glock 19 MOS
CZ P07

Those are the two I’d be picking between.

SP2022, P30, PPQ are the next set I’d look at.

The 5.19 MOS is a nearly perfect firearm.

Research Sig Sauer’s P938. Full house 9mm, sub compact, dead nuts accurate, totally reliable, best “pocket pistol” out there. I’ve bought four- two for me, and the other two, to a family member. Get the 7rd mags, so you have one in the spout, for 8rds. Single action only, ambidextrous thumb safety. Think of it as a pint sized 1911… I’ve had many pistols in the last half century, but these are my favorites, and what I carry daily… Federal 147gr HST is optimal.

Good Luck,

One&Done

For the price point you have set, get an S&W M&P 9mm and dont look back.

M&p 2.0.

For Da/sa Beretta PX4 or M92.

Have had all the above.

If your 1911 points well for you, then so should a S&W M&P M2.0 Compact. An Apex sear and spring set will likely give it a trigger to rival (with more take-up) your 1911.

I’ve only put A couple hundred rounds through my M2.0 5 inch, but it’s working very well. I’m still in load development, but I’m getting 2" at 15 yards with Gold Dots and I’ll likely improve on that. It’s not in the same league as my 1911s (and even the Glock), but it’s good enough.

Either a G19 of whatever flavor you like or a M&P 2.0 9mm Compact. I carried a G19 Gen4 for a couple of years. It’s accurate and reliable. I’ve probably put at least 5000 rounds through it and didn’t have any issues. I recently relegated it to being a nightstand weapon after I picked up a M&P 9mmC 2.0. Regardless either are very good weapons.
