Help me decide DDM4 v7 or v7LW

Thanks everyone- I opted to get the v7 LW, since it seems to fit my needs. Now it’s time to save up for some optics!

You won’t regret the lighter weight. I promise.

Agree almost 100%. I believe the gov’t profile is slightly thicker at it’s weak point (just before the diameter increase for the gas port), but it’s not much. My two pencil barrels taper down to .570 (DD) and .600 (Colt) just before the gas port. I don’t have a gov’t profile to measure, but according to AR15barrels.com, they are .625 at that point. So they are slightly stronger, but all that weight hanging off the end of the gov’t barrel is basically dead weight.

OP, excellent choice. You won’t be sorry.

I have a V5 lw. I have other AR’s, but that is the one i always seem to grab when headed to the range. It’s a very handy rifle, easy to point and not hard to carry on a sling for extended periods of time. I get about 7/8" groups at 100 yds with match hands loads.

I have a pair of DDM4V5LW guns. A his/hers. Mine is also my patrol rifle at work. It’s not full auto, and multiple mag dumps isn’t a realistic concern for Uniform Patrol or Home defense. My wife is smaller, but she really likes the balance of hers.

I really like the balance of these guns when paired with the MagPul STR stocks.

If I had to jab someone with it, I don’t see how the LW barrels are less up.to.the task than the M16A1’ I was issued while a Marine in the early 1980’s.

With that said, I don’t really see myself leading a bayonet charge. While that might be an effective crowd control tactic the next time my city faces riots, I don’t see the DOJ being thrilled with the concept.

I stand corrected, and thanks for providing specs. As I said earlier, I couldn’t wrap my head around the “Govt profile is stronger” theory based on the thickness out towards the muzzle, but I can’t dispute that it would be stronger if the thinnest part of a Govt profile is thicker than the thinnest part of a LW.

It doesn’t change my affinity for my LW, and I’m quite sure OP will enjoy theirs, but does take the steam out of my particular argument!

I put a Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 1.5 - 4 on mine over a Leupold M2 mount. Keeps it light. The Mark AR does have the motion sensor technology for the green dot. The DDM4V7lw with the above scope mounted is a wonderful thing. I also added a Magpul CTR stock and a MOE K2 grip. This combination shoots consistently less than 1.5 MOA at 100 yards with quality ammo (not FMJ). I recently put a VX-R 1.25 - 4 with red dot on another M4. I think the VX-R is a little heavier than the Mark AR.

OP, good choice going with the LW. My primary carbine is a DDM4V5LW.

The M16 and A1 had a LW “pencil barrel”, the DOD went with a heavier barrel with the M16A2 due to green Joes in the field using the barrels of their rifles to break steel bands on ammo pallets. Not too many reasons to lug around the extra weight for the average user.
