Help me buy my next 1911, needing a carry... CCO type(ish)

hey guys, in the market for a new 1911, this is ideally what I’m looking for.

Steel framed
4"~4.5" barrel
4.5~5.5" over all height
night sights
beaver tail
checkering front and back straps.

sounds easy enough right?

problem is alot of the ones I’ve been coming across are alloy framed guns and that’s just not for me due to how i treat my pistols and having a fetish for all things steel…

anyone got some suggestions?

got around 1,300~1,600 to spend.

thanks for your time!

Look into Dan Wesson, they should have cco style 1911 for you. I’ve seen a handful of samples and they seem to have great value and decent quality.

Yup Dan Wesson would be good to look at. Or maybe browse the EE see if there’s a nice deal on a colt or SA.

The only Dan Wesson that meets my specs is the bobtail and is basically $2100 and out of reach price wise, the rest are alum frames. … The steel frames are tough to come by in this configuration.

I saw a few Kimberly but am wary of their QC on their non-custom shop guns…
I’m hoping I’ve missed some model somewhere. …

Is it true ST I requires a breakdown tool?

You said CCO, but the range of measurements you gave would also allow for a commander 1911. In that case, look at Colt.

ETA: The checkering on the front strap would have to be a gunsmith add if you went with a Colt. I forgot about that part on your list.

Yeah I’m a bit fuzzy on the definition of cco, basically looking for officer frame with a command or slide, I opened up the measurements to allow for more choices. …

I love the idea of a colt !
Thanks for the suggestion I’ll definitely look into it!

Highly recommend Dan Wesson V-Bob

Any interest in a like new DW CCO for $1400?

Just noticed you wanted steel frame

That’s what I really want but the wife would kill me, lol , I’m stretching it at 1.6k … I still need to feed the thing (among others) and will also need a couple high quality holsters for whatever I pick up… I just can’t spend $2077+ the rest on a gun at the moment. :frowning:

Is there a second place…

Also what does “c” mean on the colt charts? I’m thinking composite , meaning steel slide with alum frame. …Is that right?

Here ya go…

Edit: Oops, I missed the budget

Used Baer Commanche?

If you shop around you can get a Dan Wesson VBOB for that price.
I bought a black VBOB last year lightly used for $1400.

I doubt you can get a higher quality pistol than a Dan Wesson of your choice for twice the cost.

I believe you’re talking about the part of the chart that is specifying the frame/slide material. If so “C” stands for Carbon as in Carbon Steel.

I would either:

A: Colt Commander + modifications
B: Baer Commanche + modifications
C: Dan Wesson CCO

Im asking, not giving an opinion, but would the TRP be a match?

I’d hunt down a used Ed Brown… I saw one recently in local store for $1200. If you’re gonna beat on it anyhow, I’d buy it used and run it.

Look at the STI Guardian. If you can get past the styling and the 3.9" barrel, STI makes a good gun and the Guardian is all steel.

Saw where Talo will have a Wiley Clapp CCO at the SHOT Show this year, hopefully it will make it to the streets. It would almost fit your bill except being a lightweight frame I am sure. I’ll also recommend a Les Baer Stinger or STI Guardian both are great CCO’s and if shopping around can be found in your price range especially the STI. Here is a picture of the Colt CCO done by TALO.

This may be worth a look:

I know it doesn’t have all the features you listed (beavertails and steel frame), and its obviously not in the same tier as many of the other models mentioned.

Good news is that with the several hundred to nearly a thousand dollars you might save, you have some budget for upgrades, leather, and brass.

I’m no brand shill or fanboy, but I do own the older version of this model and carry it during the summer months. It’s comfortable IWB, not too heavy, shoots well, and has been 100% reliable for me. YMMV. Good luck.
