Help deciding on a course

Okay om thinking of taking an intermediate level course. Ive been on and off shooting since I was a kid and am not new to firearms but I only recently (about a year ago) got back into shooting. I have taken a basic carbine but not much else. Only other types of training i have is going out shooting with my LE friends. I feel I am proficient in firearms and have a good foundation but dont want to get over my head and take a course im not ready for. I live in GA and not much comes around here and not much is offered locally accept basic classes. I ve been looking. So I found out a intermediate CQB class is going to be be coming to GA in a couple of months. Not only does this sound fun but seems it would be really stuff to know in an home invasion scenario. So my question is for you instructors and guy that have taken classes like this Am I GTG or should I wait. I just dont know what to expect but I dont want the chance to do some good training slip through my fingers. here is the class description. Please no flaming Im just checking my ego way before the class. Thx

Duration: 2 days / 16 hours

Overview

* Fundamentals of CQB Long Gun/Deadly Threat Encounter Matrix
* Long Gun Point Shooting Techniques
* Multiple Adversaries
* Hand-to-Hand Tactics
* Long Gun Ground Fighting/Shooting
* Zero Clearance/Point Contact Shooting
* Shooting from within Confined Spaces/Building Searches
* Knife Defense
* Force-on-Force Scenario Training

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate level class. The student needs to know and be able to demonstrate safe gun handling, weapon system familiarity, and foundational marksmanship skills

Description

The majority of defensive shootings occur in close proximity. With the increasing numbers of law enforcement, military and responsible citizens utilizing long guns for self-defense, there is an overwhelming need for a realistic training course that exposes the student to extremely close quarters battle with long guns. Unlike other “close quarters” rifle classes, this class will truly expose the student to training that will assist them in their performance at arms reach to contact distances while deploying a long gun. This course also differs from other Basic-CQB rifle schools in that the student will not be asked to be defensive, but aggressive once the decision has been made to protect their lives or the lives of someone else. The student will be able to take the lessons learned from this program and apply them to their personal training regimen or their agency’s training doctrine. This intense two-day school is designed for the operator, responsible citizen and instructor. If possible, the student is asked to bring their personal long gun (shotgun, rifle/ carbine or SMG), however, the student may use an Academy owned long gun during this course, if desired.

That’s a whole lot of stuff to cover in 2 days. Who is the instructor/s?

Some good information in this thread.

Ya Ive read alot of those post and its great info but really doesnt anwser my question. I feel cofidant the course is for intermidiate but is it to much to take on at this stage. Its not my very first class.

sig sauer academy it does seem like alot for two day thats why I am on the fence.

My thoughts, too.

At best, you are only going to get a very brief overview of each of those topics and very little practice trying to implement what is covered. IMHO, you’d be better off picking a class that focused on just one of those topics. (I do like the inclusion of FoF though.)

An experience person might be able to attend and learn some tricks or get some new ideas and get some practice in, but probably not best for the level it sounds like you are at.

Then again, if it doesn’t break your bank (its $395 for two days, right?) and it’s your only training option, then its certainly better than sitting at home wishing for the perfectly designed course to be taught in driving distance. Don’t know anything about the instructors, but the SIG academy has been around for a while.

Again, probably not ideal from my point of view of that you should focus on mastering marksmanship before moving on to other things, but how many of us get to take separate two-day courses on shooting, hand to hand, knife fighting, room clearing and FoF? (We’d all like to go to Manny Bragg to learn to shoot, LAV and Kyle Lamb for tactics, SouthNarc for knife defense, and SFAUC to tie it all in, but how realistic is that?) It could be interesting to get an overview of all these things in one weekend.

(I think I changed my mind about whether you should attend during the course of writing this post. :slight_smile: I say go for it and report back.)

I don’t think you’ll be in over your head. Instead, I suspect that the instruction will be pretty basic given the number of topics covered.

If it’s anything more advanced than the basics, it will be up to you to train once you get home in order to actually learn what you were shown.

Again, just speculation on my part.

Thx guys it helps, I think Im going to do ut and let the cards fall were they fall. Im defenitly not going to get any better by sitting at home thinking about it. I let you know how the class was.:laugh:

FWIW, VTAC will be in the Columbus, GA area in April and June for a Basic Carbine and Carbine 1.5 class.

thx im going to go check it out right now who is FWIW
