Help a friend get a starter AR<$1500

I’ve got a friend who is new to ARs. I don’t know how much he wants to spend exactly, but he was interested in the LE6900 I told him about until I got all the info on it. Not what I want to get him into.

I don’t want to guide him into a rifle that he will not be able to build on. I’ve built my 7 ARs with good quality parts Noveske, BCM, LMT, DD, and such, and I’d like to help him.

A Colt LE6920 would be a great start. The pricing and parts availability are just starting to improve for DIY builds, but he is not a really patient guy.

What would you suggest in a complete rifle? Or what would you do for a DIY or custom rifle?

Too vague? Any ideas would be appreciated.

He could grab these two and then wait for a Seekins forged lower to come in stock since they have been pretty regularly.

Then grab whatever BCM upper with BCG and charging handle comes in stock.

Complete rifle is the way to go for his first IMHO. Quality guns at good prices are coming back, if he’s REALLY impatient tell him to whip out the credit card…

G&R still has a few S&W Magpul Mids

Grabagun had a BCM mod 0 or two in stock for $1200 today, and I’ve seen Colts in the LGS and @ Walmart for pre panic prices.

Tell him to wait and don’t do anything silly! He’ll find a quality gun…

Clyde Armory also has 6920s. Reg and Magpul FDE.

Not a bad deal on a Geissele trigger and LPK, the BCM set up is good too. I guess we have to decide to buy a complete rifle or build and I’m unsure at this point.

So let’s say:
BCM stock kit w/H buffer – 95.00
BCM 16" Mid-length BFH LW w/BCG – 760.00
Hand guards - Free I’ve got some extras
BCM/Troy rear sight – 100.00
Stripped Lower? – 150.00 to 200.00 pre-crazy prices
LPK/trigger – 240.00

------------ Total 1395.00

Not bad. He could save up some dough and get an Aimpoint PRO

Does something like this look doable?

You can get a PSA lower for $120

Yeah, I think we’ll skip the S&W rifles, but you might be right about finding a complete rifle. But one thing I forgot to say is that it needs to be a Comiefornia friendly dealer.

I’m walking a buddy through a build right now and I’ve had the opposite issue. I’ve had to talk him out of spending far to much money of several parts because he’s somewhat impulsive. I’d honestly rather have the guy being cheap and have to sell him on a part than have him help exacerbate the problem by buying PMAGs at $40 a piece.

What is a “starter AR”?

Prices are dropping faster by the day now. They say there will be no ban on rifles or mags but who knows? But if not, they will keep falling.

A basic 16" carbine

Of course, it doesn’t look much different from my advanced AR carbine

They’re also much easier and cheaper to upgrade than a starter wife

I’ve done business with Clyde Armory before, I’ll check that out. They were really good to do business with.

Thanks

Wow! Clyde’ is the first website I have seen with 6920’s at a “reasonable” price. Jump on that deal and use the extra $200 for some mags (PSA 10 pack deal) and ammo.

Yeah, that is a problem too. My bud is impulsive too, but he buys stuff just because it looks good. You know they type. You can put chrome spinner wheels on a turd and make it look good.

Yeah, now if they’ll ship the 6920 to Comiefornia we might have a deal.
I just gotta get them to put a stupid bullet button on it. They can keep the magazine.

BASIC:
A rifle with a good mil-spec bolt, barrel, and good basic parts, assembled with enough care to make sure the castle nut and gas key are staked. Basic hand guards, grip, and taper pinned front sight. A2 flash hider, 16" inch (mid-length) barrel , preferably HF CL. Single stage trigger. Basic 5-6 position adjustable stock/ Mil-spec buffer tube, H buffer, carbine spring. Troy rear sight.

Deluxe:
As opposed to one with a full length floating rail made by Geiselle, DD, or Noveske. $450 Noveske barrel, low profile pinned gas block, Battlecomp 1.0, Vltor/Noveske upper receiver, Noveske Gen 2 Lower, Colt LPK, BCM BCG, Geiselle trigger, Front and rear Troy BUIS, Leupold Mk6 1-6X in an ADM mount. LMT receiver extension, Spike’s st2 buffer, Sprinco Blue buffer spring. LMT SOPMOD Stock, BCM mod4 charging handle, BCM grip, Surefire X300, and an Atlas bipod (Why not.). And we’ll throw in 20 HK Heavy Duty magazines.

Yeah, basic.

YUP. That would help a lot.

This is pretty much where it is at in entry level complete carbines:

Do it… http://clydearmory.com/colt-le6920.html

BCM uppers have been in stock often this week. Just checked and a 14.5 and 3 of 16" available now. BCG/CH option not bad either.
