I’m in the same boat. Alot HAS changed with ARs and the 1911 too. I saw it all coming. I don’t NEED things like full rails and pistons so I avoid them. But what does NEED have to do with? To each his own. I do smile upon noticing the rush of many to lighten up their rifles after loading them down.
Welcome , this is the right place to learn about the AR. There’s been an explosion in US experience & knowledge in the AR family (especially the Carbine sub-species ) since 9/11.

I am new here as well. The help and knowledge has been a huge benefit in assisting me to choose my first AR wisely. (picking up my new DDXV this afternoon). And here it is, fresh out of the bag:
