I’m considering a Noveske upper for my SHTF rifle. But the damnthing is pretty heavy…even for a 12.5" upper. The 9" rail is 16ounces. How effectiveis the heat sink in it? Does it really help prolong barrel life, etc.?
Unless you were planning on some serious mag dumps I would think the heat sink only adds weight and minimal cooling ability.
NO!!

Thanks for the input. I’ve never thought much about the heat sink concept. And by looking at these photos it seems as though it would add quite a bit of weight. Yes, I want it to be for SHTF but I won’t be doing any mag dumps. I know the possibility is there for SHTF, but unlikely you’ll be doing mag dumps, even if the North Koreans come over the hillside :jester: So, if it really isn’t offering any significant protection …seems like weight that won’t be missed.

Heat sink is for sustained fire and or a anti seige role. Like the Colt IAR.
How is a 9" rail 16oz when DD 12" rails are a little over 15oz
Because of Noveske’s giant heat sink that’s attached to it.
I wonder if a properly heatsinked barrel could be lighter than a hbar profile barrel but better at heat rejection.
That thing is ridiculous. I would throw it away. You dont need it
Why stop at fins or sinks?
Lol how about a mount for a FAN mounted on the rail? the water cooled idea is just impractical. I think a 10" fan would be more practical:jester:
I think if I felt a need to put a heat sink in a barrel I would go with the one from JP.
Thats alot better looking than anything I ever thought existed. Not sure how effective it would be if when you put a hanguard on there.
The greatest advantage of the DD rails is that they are tough AND LIGHT. Hence their name. According to this chart from tactical yellow visor:https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwswheghNQsFnUZMkZNF2DQ&output=html
The 9" Noveske rail is 16oz.
