Headed to NYC on Sunday, Can I carry a folding knife?

Title says it all.

The wife and I are headed to NYC on Sunday for the week.

I’ve never been.

I’ve carried some type of pocket knife on me since I was in High School. Can I carry my Benchmade folder in my pocket without risk of running afoul of the law?

Thanks!

Realistic Answer: Probably.

Legal Answer: If your knife has any kind of “gravity assist” device on it, this includes quick release locks, springs, or the little nub on Kershaw blades. Basically ANY knife you can open with one hand and a flick of the wrist is illegal in NYC, subject to confiscation by the responding police officer, and you will receive a fine of $250 dollars for the first offense.

Also any knife with a blade over 4 inches in length is illegal as well.

I have a friend that was recently cited for his Kershaw. But the police told him to just drop it to the bottom of his pocket in the future and gave it back to him after they ticketed him…

If I were you I wouldn’t wear any knife on a clip even if it isn’t “gravity assisted”.

keep it deep in your pocket … any knife visible to the public ( on your belt or clipped on to the inside of your pants pocket ) is illegal . most likely a ticket , unless its a gravity knife , or a 4 inch blade , or an automatic … which will get you arrested . be careful … a new class of rookies just graduated and the dont know descretion … like the first poster stated … what i dont know what you have in your pocket wont hurt you

The fact that it’s visible, without regard for other variables, renders it unlawful? Willing to believe it, but do you have the statute language?

Concealed means concealed.

Carry a standard lockback, ~3" blade length, of sufficient quality to do work but reasonable enough expense to ditch if you’re about to get in trouble. A Spyderco Delica or a BM Griptillian is a good choice.

These two principles should be referred to as the 11th and 12th Commandments.

Roger.

Understood.

Thanks for the info.

In New York City it is illegal to possess anything which would pose a danger to the Section 8 housing inhabitants as they rob, beat and / or murder you. Unfortunately.

Pepper spray is also legal in NYC

If your a cop and you call ahead and talk to the precinct commander in the area your going and he gets permission from the cheif your good to go lol. There are alomost 38000 cops in NYS and thats just the citys department.

I would just put the knife in your pocket and forget it. Its like any other city stay out of the bad area’s where you dont fit in and use your head.

Bwaahaaa!! :stuck_out_tongue:

They are being used; like they are not exactly an “endangered species” or something. There is gunfire every night from what I hear…
