I have a Colt 20" H-Bar rifle (6601). I’ve had this gun for years, but haven’t shot it much.
It is a fixed carry handle, heavy barrel gun with those goofy screw vs. front push pin guns.
It is rather accurate for a non-free floated barrel.
I don’t shoot it so much anymore because it’s so front heavy. I’ve been thinking about having the barrel turned down to an A2 or even an A1 outside diameter.
Is there anyone who can do this work and refinish the barrel? Would doing this affect the barrel’s accuracy? Or would it just be cheaper to try to find a new barrel and have it installed?
I don’t really want to sell the gun off, especially with the way things seem to be going. This is an extra “Fun Gun”, as I have a model 6920 for each member of my household.
How about buy another upper assembly and don’t modify the original barrel? With the way things are going, I would want to preserve the value of that Colt.
Is there a way to adapt the large hole on the front of the receiver (screw vs. front push pin) to accept a upper with the smaller mil-spec push pin hole? If so, I might just get another upper. But then, I’d talk myself into getting a lower to match…
This may sound dumb, but one reason I have be hesitant to sell off the entire rifle and replace it with something else is that I bought it NIB from an individual. No paperwork. Not that I expect anyone to come searching and seizing guns. (I feel it’d be almost impossible, logistically, to seize the amount of guns that have been sold in this country in just the last 10 days.)
+1 with Steve/ADCO gang. They turned down my Bushmaster 14.5 HBAR down to a govt. profile and it came out great. Since you have a 6920 in the household already then go with the reprofiling as I would hate to have a rifle/upper sitting in the safe that you won’t shoot. Or buy a govt. profile 20 barrel…
Beat Trash. What size is your pivot pin? If it is .250 they you can simply replace it with a standard pivot pin, spring, and detent. That’s what I did.
I’ll have go dig up my calipers and measure it. I thought the front pivot pins on Colts of this era were larger than standard pivot pins.
Fortunately this is the only gun I have with this type of receiver. AL\ll of m y other Colts are have the standard pivot pins. Unfortunately, this limits my ability to just slap on another upper, unless the other upper has the large hole also.
