Has anyone ever Hard Chromed an AR15?

Do pictures exist of such an animal?

If not, why hasn’t anyone done so?

I am semi-seriously considering that maybe in the future I might talk to someone about getting it done :stuck_out_tongue:

Part. Tolerances.

Don’t people have handguns + all internals hard chromed all the time? Aren’t there coats that are only microns thick?

I would assume the multitude of people who Krylon/Duracoat their AR’s would have similar problems.

For what reason? Seriously what are your motives, or intended end reason here?

“Why hasn’t anyone done so?”…

Do you mean coat the inner workings/parts, or the entire gun?

Do you mean having the entire rifle done? As in making a super-shiny rifle?

Basically, maybe just the upper or lower for a two tone look.

I saw a picture of this Uzi and thought it looked gorgeous :

The treatment would mainly be for aesthetics… Maybe I am not thinking of hard chrome…Nickel plating?

I’ve never been to ARFCOM, but this smells like it. Did a quick google search for nickle plated rifle, http://www.valleyplating.net/

Ahh, just some blingy flash :suicide:; pretty lame.

I was under the impression you can’t hard chrome aluminum - or at least that it may be technically feasible but doesn’t work very well.

The uzi receiver is made from steel… steel can be hard-chromed…

I do not believe an aluminum AR upper/lower can be HC.

maybe get a machined upper and lower in the white and have them poilshed then clear anodized??

Oh, that makes more sense, completely forgot about metallurgy considerations.

I was really thinking about having something more unique. Yes, you could pass it off as for “bling” considerations, but I don’t see any difference between this and people doing “Desert Tan” or “Olive Drab” finishes.

Colt sold factory electroless nickel SP-1 rifles in the early 80’s and called it “Coltguard”.

Google coltguard for pics of some.

Polish it

If it’s ok to polish stainless steel firearms and leave them in the white, why not aluminum? You will need to treat the surface or it will oxidize and turn dull

Black Rain Ordnance offers some polished aluminum uppers and lowers.

I gotta say that those Coltguard finished rifles look pretty damn good. Not in a pimpalicious way, either (and I hate pimpalicious). But in a good way. Kind of like a nickle finished shotgun with black synthetic furniture.

Hey now…I think that one day I’d like to make a triple set one day…electroless nickle finished AR, Rem 870P, and Colt 1911…all with black furniture/grips…

Did you do that? I wonder what will strip the finish without damaging anything. I wonder what I could use to treat the surface…

I believe the UZI has Robar’s NP3 finish on it.

I would not strip the anodizing off an AR leaving the aluminum bare. Aluminum is soft and anodizing is hard. You could have one electroless nickel plated, like “Coltguard.”

Mesican style

my goodness, that could be the tackiest thing i’ve ever seen.

hrmmmmmmm You all know Springfield Armory’s Black Hard Chrome? …

If I had a NFA for a safe queen it would look good beside my hard chrome P7
