Harford Engraving Service

Stumbled across I design that I liked, and thought it needed to go on the side of an AR receiver. The raven/Nevermore thing came from a joke at work, and has stuck around for longer than it should have (especially since it’s not nearly as dark or depressing as Poe’s poem). Anyway, here is the image I found.

I though to myself, “Cool, even has the word my damn coworker keeps saying.” I get in touch with Vic at Tats2 T’s (the original artist of the image), and get the go-ahead for my using the image for an engraving, on the condition that I send back a couple pictures of the finished product. Cool. I made a black & white version, and shopped around for someone who could do an image that wasn’t simply a line-drawing cut into metal.

Through Google, I found Harford Engraving Service, and hit 'em up with an email. These folks are a full-service engraving shop, everything from custom logos to NFA-compliant engravings for SBRs and all that other Title II goodness. Jim replied pretty quickly, and we exchanged several more emails discussing the type of work he does and what can be done with my image. He came up with these samples:

The first style is a higher resolution engraving that cannot be painted. The second type of cut is slightly lower resolution, which would make the letters of the image slightly grainy, but can be painted (another service they provide). Jim had “bad news” for me when he said that the skull was a very fine detail that might not show up all that well in the final product. Which confused me before I actually looked at the picture and found, lo and behold, a skull within the raven. Since I didn’t notice it originally, and didn’t much care, I said scrap it. I liked the look of the first one more and decided to go with the higher quality image.

For this project, I decided to use the CD Defense receiver I got when Mr. Kassnar was selling the preproduction lowers here a while back. It’s the finest of the three receivers I had, aesthetically, and was already stripped. From the day of packaging to the day it’s back in my hands, the total turn-around time was one week. Not damn bad at all.

The result?

Jim was great to work with. Since I plan to delve into the NFA weapons bit, and because I know that I’ll need at least one more logo engraved on an AR lower, I’ve got a good idea of who I’ll be using for both services.

That is pretty badass.

Killer.

That looks awesome.

I had a couple lowers done by them as well - good service.

James does good work. He did my SBR engraving inside the trigger guard area and also a Gadsden flag on the magwell. Sent it out and had it back in the same week.

I’m having him do some work right now… the samples so far look awesome. I can’t wait to get the work finalized.

The quality of the work looks awesome good choice.

Snapped this photo while I was filling out transfer paperwork with Jim. The shallow depth of field in the pic doesn’t do the work justice: it’s fantastic. I’ll get a better photo once it’s built but because of the laws here I don’t get to take possession of the lower for at least 7 days. :frowning:

I wanted to get two AR lowers engraved with a Zombie Hunter logo and found Jim @ Harford Engraving Service through MDShooters.com

I have a t-shirt and some stickers that I found on Zazzle using this logo, and at first was considering getting that. But it would be sacrilege to get an AK engraved on an AR, right? Not to mention I figured the smaller detail in the cartridges/barbwire might prove difficult to engrave and I really wanted something that was “mine.”

I worked up a custom logo of my own in Photoshop, based on the above mentioned logo, but from scratch. I used a new font, new skull, dropped the small items, replaced the AK with an AR, and replaced the fire axe with a chainsaw. After all, a chainsaw is a more traditional anti-zombie weapon than a fire axe, no?

Jim was very helpful in working with me: creating some proofs and sending me images until he came up with something that I really appreciated. One neat thing worth noting is that his work adds a three-dimensional look to the engraving. I gave him a flat silhouette image and got back results that pop a lot more.

While he was at it, I had him whip me up some port covers, and change my selectors from “SAFE/FIRE” to “SAFE/HORDE”

I’m really pleased with the final product: it looks great. As the final bit of flair, I used skull magazine release buttons from Valkyrie Tactical.

Jim does great work. Any future engraving needs I might have will go straight to him.

(P.S. - I asked Jim not to use this logo on anyone else’s lower, just so I can have ‘one of a kind’ setups. He was very respectful of this since I created the artwork)

The engraving process:

Byron ,where did you get the dust cover?that is a must have .I love your logo too/

Thanks man. Jim @ Harford Engraving Service, who engraved the logo for me, did the dust covers also. I asked him to whip them up for my builds, but since they are his design I’m sure he’d be happy to make more and sell them to anyone.

That looks awesome, Byron. Love that zombie hunter theme. If I had any artistic talent, I’d try my hand at my own logo, but I think I’m going to end up having to commission someone to do what I want.

Rock on, Zombie Hunter. :stuck_out_tongue:

What is the price on the ‘Zombi Hunter’ dust cover and does anyone know what he charges for a basic SBR NFA engraving?

Dust Covers are badass! Got to get some!

I just noticed the skull mag releast button. nice. thay dust cover is pretty sweet too.

I think Jim charged around $10 for each dust cover, but don’t hold me to that. Since he was doing a bunch of work for me at the same time I pretty much just looked at the tally. Sorry, I don’t know what he charges for SBR engraving but he is very responsive if you drop him an email.

The skull magazine release button is from Valkyrie Tactical although I can’t currently find it on their website to provide you with a direct link to the product.

Here is another place that has the SKULL mag release button.
