I see that posted time and again, to not hang a bunch of crap on your gun. After reading tons of threads it seems good optics, a white light and a descent sling are pretty well accepted as almost necessary. What’s all this other junk people are talking about?

Lasers, secondary optics, bipods, magwell grips, stocks that hold a spare magazine, magwell attachments that hold a second magazine, six different handstops on the handguard… Someone somewhere probably has a legitimate need for one of these things, but too many shooters put ALL of it on a single gun for no discernable purpose other than “it looks cool.”
Well, on my AR I have an optic, light, sling, and bipod all with qd. The bipod does not actual stay on the ar though
I had a buddy like that, magwell grip, bipod, acog, vertical grip and 2 white lights. We ran a course and after day 1 he soon changed his ways. As a bonus he finally admitted to me “f*ck you were right.” It was pretty satisfying hearing that and seeing the pained look on his face from all the lactic acid buildup in his arms from swinging that heavy thing around.
I completely agree with you, but on one hand, there are some people that need a whole bunch of stuff. That’s why going to the gym helps also.

2 is 1 and 1 is none. Therefore, you need 2 optics (ACOG + RMR on top will do nicely), 2 sets of backup iron sights (one set of fold down, one set at 45 degrees off-set), 2 slings (single point off a noveske endplate or magpul asap and adjustable two point sling on the rail and stock QD attachment points), and 2 white lights (x300 or TLR-1 at 12 o’clock and a G2 or 6P at 1:30/2 o’clock) per weapon.

I would define not “hanging a bunch of crap on your gun” as; not temporarily or permanently affixing anything to your rifle that you don’t need. I may be slightly biased however, as my carry rifle looks like this… (Sorry MarkM, it does have a detachable carry handle… :p)

I never understood Lasers on an AR.
Maybe a laser designator for a military weapon, but what are the lasers I see on civilian AR’s?
IR lasers to use with helmet mounted NV.
A vickers sling… An aimpoint (optics ) I like the grip that came on my DD but could do without it and maybe a tac light … Maybe … That’s all I want on my AR… All other crap is just that crap…

Not really.
If you are going to be running at night, a weapon mounted IR laser, and/or a weapon mounted PVS-14 may be very useful.
The point is that just because you don’t need a certain item, doesn’t mean it is useless for everyone. For me, I prefer to keep weight to a minimum, and have a stupid-proof carbine. For someone else, in a different situation might need optic, light, IR laser, bi-pod, etc.
In other words, just because you don’t need something, doesn’t mean it is “crap.”

You’re not helping the case for lasers.

An often repeated saying, “Mission drives the gear.” If what your mission requires a visible laser, IR Laser/illuminator, NVG, white light, M203, M-203 sights (of which there are at least 3, some unit make you use 2 at the same time:rolleyes:), BAD levers, Redi-mag… If some of that is in your mission profile, that’s your gear. For the average Joe, which 99% of us are, white light, sling and an optic is about it.
Same thing could be said about 30 round magazines…are they really needed? or do we just want them?
I think that comes down to mission as well. If you need a smaller foorprint using the 20 rounder then drive on. If not, why not have what has become the standard capacity since the 70’s? Same could be said, “Why not the 60 or 100 rounders (Surefire’s and Beta)?” I guess it is all about compromise in weight and what you need to get the job done. Do you have a need for FA fire? If not a 30 or 20 would make more sense. Mission really determines what you’re going to lug around, on and off the gun.
Take the IAR the Corps is using now. Only 30 rounders authorized last I checked. Why is that? Why not 60, 100?
