Handstop on a pistol

I know that placing a VFG on an AR pistol will classify it as an AOW, but what about something like a KAC handstop. Would that cause any problems?

Call the ATF NFA branch and ask them directly. If it is OK, then I would write the ATF NFA branch a letter and ask for a response in writing. This way you have something to CYA if you are challenged/arrested over it. Unless someone has something in writing from the ATF stating it is OK that they are willing to share then all you will get from people are uneducated guesses and opinions. All of which could get you into serious trouble.

My guess would be no, it is not OK.

If you ask you risk turning a grey area into an outright black one.

 NFA is not something to fuck around with, you’re either in the clear or you’re breaking the law. Frankly adding something like a little aluminum nub to a toy is not something I am willing to spend the next 20 years of my life locked in federal prison for.

Do the smart thing and call.

Yes call, but do not write. If you feel it’s probably not the right thing to do, it’s probably not. Giving the BATFE tech director a reason to opine a new interpretation of the law never seems to work out favorably for our rights.

If you really, really want a handstop on a “pistol” then make it an AOW.

Or mount a rail mounted flashlight on the bottom rail.

This was the point I was trying to make.

I would call NFA just to be sure. But, Coharie, a manufacturer of MP5 type clones sells a pistol based of the MP5K PDW as a pistol and they sell it with a handstop.

I have had pretty good luck when I have called NFA with questions.

Please post what you find out.

Given the shenanigans of Coharie/Special Weapons/Todd Bailey in the past I would not put it past him for a second to be producing and selling illegal NFA weapons to an unsuspecting customer. I would not use this example as any sort of proof that this is legal.

I agree but the ATF usually won’t allow any shananigans when it comes to NFA. I also check the HK forums often and there are a lot of these guns out there. My experience with Todd has been nothing but excelent. He took care of a waranty issue for MP5 clone SBR and was very pleasant to talk to, unlike what I have heard of him.

from what i’ve heard before it’s not allowed, but i’m not sure.
