Handle Removal from an A1 upper

I have seen this done and was curious as to how much weight it saved by doing this? I’m trying to determine if I want to do this with my next build or try and leave the handle in place but lighten it up some how.

Thanks for you input in advance!

not much - it’s already pretty light as is. what were you planning on doing for a rear sight or optic? cut off the handle just forward of the sight and use the iron only?

Yeah, that is what i was planning to do and use the A1 rear. I’m wanting to build a lightweight upper and was thinking of going this route. Just didn’t know if the weight savings would be worth the effort since the handle portion of the sight is really useless.

i wouldn’t do it. i’d just leave it as is or get a flat top.

A flat top upper would be a little heavier than I am looking for, I am planning on using a slick side A1 upper for my build.

If I can find a carbon 15 lower I plan on using one of them for the lower to cut weight.

Hopefully I’ll get the barrel ordered later today, its on sale now so I think I’ll pick one up then talk to Adco to figure out what the next step will be on that end of of it.

:nono:
Some things are worth a little weight.

Are you going for a 5lb loaded weapon? A flat top with MBUS will weigh less than the A1 that is about to be cannibalized.

Have you considered the new slick side flat top upper that rainier is selling? I would think that plus a DD, Troy or MBUS rear would be more versatile without weighing much more.

I haven’t considered a slick side flat top actually. I just have read that a flat top upper and back up site is more on weight than a slick sided A1. Maybe I’m going in the wrong direction.

I also want basic simplicity as a goal to this build. Use it as a truck gun as well as a loaner.

Anyone have any weight figures for the comparison to provide?

I looked on Rainers site, but I couldn’t find their slick side flat top upper on the site. I found one by VLTOR that still has the shell deflector. Does anyone know if they offer one with out that as well?

thanks in advance!

The MUR is a good receiver, but it does weigh and cost a bit more.

Thanks! I did see that one but it has the shell deflector on it.

I wanted to ask another question so I figured I’d ask in a thread that I already had started.

I’m having trouble finding a .625 FSB that is non F marked to use with the A1 upper. Does anyone know of a place I can look? I guess I’m just not hitting the right sites. If I can find one with out the bayo lug and sling mount that would even be better.

Thanks in advance if you know of a site that would sell them.

Used but it’s a colt part. I am pretty positive that 16a1 is .625 id but it wouldn’t hurt to confirm.

Seriously Stop.

What’s the purpose of the gun? I get and like KISS but what you’re talking about doesn’t make sense. Cutting down a detachable carry handle to make BUIS makes sense. What you’re talking about doesn’t.

If it’s a truck gun why does an ounce of weight or even 8 ounces matter.

I built an A1 upper for my SBR. I love it. Just ran 90 rounds FA through it a few days ago.

Also if you’re looking to buy a used FSB don’t. They are drilled while mounted to your bbl. Durring this process the underside of the bbl is also drilled. This is what holds the front sight base in place.

It looks different now with MOE handguards and a light mounted but it is still my KISS gun.

I’m not going to cut it down at this point. I was just curious as I have seen this done. Nice SBR. This is going to be my truck gun and I want something fool proof.

I’m going to use a new FSB at this point I have decided anyhow. I just want to have the the lug and sling mount cut off.

Op, I’d recommend getting a flattop upper instead of cutting anything. Put in the flat top, save the A2 upper just it case you change your mind.

Do not buy a Carbon 15 lower. A google search will explain why, and in detail.

Try to keep the front end of the gun free of clutter. Use either the MOE handguards or a rail system with detachable rails. I took a few rails off of my CASV-M rail system and it feels pounds lighter. The rails I took off were short ones too, around 2" or so.
