H&K P2000sk: early impressions

It took a while to find one in the current craziness, and then I had to endure California’s 10-day waiting period, plus a couple days beyond that because I’m pretty busy these days… but finally, I picked up my new P2000sk LEM (v2) in 9mm yesterday morning. Surprisingly I was even able to get one for considerably under MSRP.

This gun is intended to replace the Glock 26 that was my EDC for a while, until I became frustrated with getting hit in the face with brass + the occasional stovepipe, and none of the standard fixes worked. On weekdays I’m mostly in the office, out seeing clients, or in meetings so for those situations I need a gun that’s easy to conceal in normal business attire. Yes, it’s possible to hide a bigger gun, in fact I’ve been doing it for a few weeks while waiting on the current solution and will need to do it a while longer while I order a good holster for the new gun and get it added to my permit. But it’s much easier to carry a subcompact gun especially when I’m around the same people for hours at a time. My woods gun, carried mostly on weekends and at most 10% of the time, is typically larger (currently a M&P 45) and I’m not anticipating any need to change that soon.

Back to the H&K: last night I field stripped and cleaned it, and this morning put 100 rounds of American Eagle 124gr FMJ and about 30 rounds of WWB 115gr through it.

As expected the gun was flawless, no malfunctions of any kind. I’m going to need to spend a little time getting used to the LEM trigger, at 15 yards there were a few flyers during the first couple of mags. But the reset is distinct, and by the end of the day I was able to snap off double taps with no issues. For a CCW gun the trigger is fine, I’d originally thought about ordering the springs for the lighter v1 conversion (about 5lbs pull vs the approx. 7 for the v2), but right now I’m thinking that may not be necessary. I’ll let things wear in for a while and then re-evaluate.

I’d expected the Euro-style mag release to take some getting used to, but within the first 20 rounds I was able to drop mags easily without looking and without shifting my grip, for my hands it was easiest using the middle finger. I probably will order and install the larger/extended 45c mag release though.

To test ease of concealment I jammed the gun in a G26 IWB holster (pretty tight fit because the HK trigger guard is wider), and the gun just disappears under a dark-colored tee-shirt. That surprised me because the grip is a good quarter-inch longer than a G26, but apparently the narrower top of the slide and the melted corners more than make up for that. It’s a double bonus, because I can get all of my fingers on the grip of the HK with the standard mags, they’re slightly scrunched together but if anything that makes for a more secure grip. For good measure, it’s fairly easy to load the full 10 rounds into the brand new magazines.

Finally, the quality of the gun is obvious just handling it. It’s a very minimalist design, the only controls on the side of the gun are the slide release and the mag release, nothing else in the way and no distractions. It’s also fully ambidextrous, which became very important to me a couple of years ago when a shoulder injury forced me to carry weak side for a few months.

So… looks like I have a new favorite EDC. I’m very happy thus far with the P2000sk, and am seriously considering replacing a couple of my other guns with larger HKs. The only disappointment is that I waited this long.

They are indeed very nice.
Try only swapping the firing pin block spring to the lighter one. It takes about 5 minutes.
This will reduce the trigger pull from about 7.5 to 6 lbs while retaining the strong reset from the heavy trigger spring.
There is not a lighter factory mainspring.
The extended mag release and an index finger actuation are the hot lick.
It is an amazingly accurate gun.

Id like more details on modifications, i have a v2 .40 that i have had for a while!

Great shooter and my go to carry piece when i put on the “big” gun instead of the pocket piece

OP,

I carried the P2000SK in .40 as a daily carry from 2006-12. I stopped carrying it in September when a limit was enforced on the number of personally owned weapons we could carry, forcing me back to my UCPc with a 340PD as a back-up.

If I had to choose a one gun solution the P2000SK and its bigger brother would be at the top of my list. I also recommend the paddle swap for the mag release but I like the LEM trigger just the way it is.

If you haven’t gotten some flat floorplates, I recommend getting some as they do reduce the profile and print of the pistol.

Good luck,

K

I’d love to add a P2000sk V3 in 9mm to my handguns—at this time, I have the slightly larger P2000 V3 9mm and consider it one of my favorite pistols.
Yeah, replacing the small mag release with the larger one is easy and the best mod you can make. I did it to all my HK pistols.

I’ve had my P2000SK in 40 as my CCW gun since 2004. It replaced my full sized 40 USP which is a great gun also but too big for CCW. Actually I’m more accurate with the P2000SK also. A few years ago I went to the larger magazine release also. I waited too long, do that right away. Its a major improvement.
Got the new PPQ for Christmas. No range time yet. It may end up being my new favorite, ergonomically it already is but we’ll see. The P2000SK will stay my CCW go to gun though.

My EDC is a HK P2000SK / Light LEM / 9MM, with GGI RRCDP and HK45C magazine release. Flat mag baseplates on the magazine in the weapon, P30/15rd magazine for a reload.

Hard combo to beat.

I like that horizontal mag pouch, who makes it?

Thanks, man!

Just back from the range, we need to qualify with every gun we wish to list on our CCW here… and the P2000sk just shot as well as or better than any other gun I’ve qualified with, including full size guns. Not bad considering it’s not even broken in yet (130 rounds through it before the 50 tonight), and I’m very definitely not fully acclimated to the LEM trigger yet.

They are very nice, maybe a lighter trigger but they are reliable as hell.

I’ve been pretty happy with my P2000 9mm V1 LEM. Despite its size, I carry it daily with no troubles in a milt sparks VM2. The LEM trigger took a while to get used to and I had to train my thumbs to not ride the slide release. Compared to the G19 it replaced, it’s a nice improvement. The flat magazine bases are highly recommended and I look forward to putting an HK45 extended magazine release on it. I’d like to convert it to V4, but I have issues figuring out what springs to get.

I believe I have about 6-800 rnds through it right now. Mostly full-power reloads.
