H&K G3 in service

Are there any countries that still use the G3 as their primary infantry rifle? I thought that Pakistan and Turkey might still be using them, but wasn’t sure.

Ones I know of that still use the G3 in heavy quantities.

Denmark
Estonia
Greece
Iran (primary army rifle, also uses kalashnikovs)
Latvia
Lithuania
Mexico (primary army rifle)
Nigeria (and most of Africa)
Norway (being replaced with the HK416)
Pakistan (primary army rifle, also uses kalashnikovs)
Portugal
Turkey
Saudi-Arabia

Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania have ex norway/sweden rifles.

Most countries that used the G3 heavily, like Germany and Norway, still have significant quantities on hand. Many other countries still use the G3/PSG in sniper roles.

Nevermind. Armakraut already answered the question

Germany is still using the G3 in large quantities in Afghanistan as a DMR. It was thought the HK417 would take over in that role but apparently failed the accuracy test.

Do you have any info to back up that accuracy statement? I kinda find that hard to believe, but not saying it’s impossible. Do the Germans even issue the 417, or at least looked into it?

Here you go.

I have to assume they had a new accuracy standard because I can’t imagine the 417 not being as accurate as the G3.

Thanks for the link, they must have a pretty tight accuracy requirement. Not that I have any experience with the 417, but that’s surprising.

Add Paraguay to the list, but not primary rifle anymore…

The G3 is also in use (not as primary) in Venezuela and some countries in central america. And I’m sure in many places in africa…

I’ve definitely seen a few pictures of German G3’s with TA11 ACOG’s in service in Afghanistan.

It would make sense that there would be an enhanced accuracy requirement. However, keep also in mind that a G3 in good mechanical condition was cabable of extremely good accuracy for its day if you could handle the 1 ton trigger pull. HK used to supply a 100m test target with each 91 they sold and the one that came with my 91A2 was about 1.5" which I don’t think is bad at all.

If I read on the firearmblog.com that the sky was blue, I’d go outside to see for myself.

No it’s not bad at all, especially if one factors in how reliable the rifle is. But at the end of the day, with the exception of SG1 variants and the like, it is generally a 2 MOA rifle on average.
