Gunsmithing for FreeFloat

Im interested in getting a Troy quad rail … now how hard is it going to be for me to install a free float if i know very little about gunsmithing? I was going to get the regular quad rail, but i feel that i should just get a free float because they are better.

Its fairly straight forward and easy. You have to get the delta ring and its component off, if you know your not going to use the old hand guards again you can just cut it off with a dremmel or mini disc. Anyway, get down to the barrel nut. The troy installs around the barrel nut in two pieces. There is two alignment tabs, so its all but impossible to not line up the top rail with your flat top receiver. With the resources on this site at your disposal, you almost cant screw up.

Do you think the DD omega 7 is a better choice?

I’ve got to be honest, I dont have any experience with DD rails. I’ve only had a surefire M73 that Im trying to sell and the Troy I have on my rifle now. Your going to get all kinds of opinions on peoples personal preferences for rails. It looks as though there is zero mods that have to be done to install the DD.

I’ve installed the Omega before and it is really easy. The 2 piece freefloats these days are pretty easy and straightfoward. Now if you have a 1 piece freefloat, then it gets a little more complicated. I don’t know anything about Troy. Is it a 2 piece?

The locking procedure to the barrel nut is two pieces yes, there is the the 6 o’clock rail that slides on and locks in with a detent button. That has nothing to do with fixing the rail to the gun though.

Yes - similar easy install, but it is not free float.

One of the two models they offer is free float. Troy has the MRF which is free float and the MRF DI which isnt.

I was referring to the MRF-DI for ease of install: http://www.troyind.com/MRFDI.html

Yeah i might just get the Omega… i mean im not sure because im only going to put my surefire light on and a front grip … and maybe a sling.

Plus, the DD Omega is actually a free-float and requires no gunsmithing to install. JM2CW.

For what im going to do should i just get the non free float and save 100 bucks?

I have the DD Omega, and really like it. It is rock solid. But in hindsight, I would have been just as well off with the Troy MRF-DI and could have saved $100, which is what I recommend that you do. If you do, send me $50.

hahaha … im just trying to figure out how people say they are going to mount a scope on the handguard…that makes no sense.

DD Lite Rail would be better

But the lite rail requires substantially more dissaembly of the upper assembly than the OP has expressed interest in.

Why not try the MI FF. I find it just as appealing as the Troy or DD. I know it’s not as Gucci as the other 2 but it is just as functional.
