Gun from old storage unit. What to do

I know this isnt an AR related question but I cant post in General Discussion at the moment. But my question is my family has a storage facility and recently my dad came across a nice smith and wesson 38 special. I know you cant just pocket it and be ok but who or what do I need to do to make sure its 100% legal? Just get it registered and make sure there no legal issues attached to it by chance? And also what are the repercussions if its not done and you got caught with it? Im guessing straight to the back of the squad car and a felony on your record. Ive told my dad time and time again to go ahead and get it registered but he never carries it and it stays in a box in a closet somewhere so I guess hes not worried about it. Just trying to see exactly whats up on guns obtained like that

check your state laws, get it reg if need be. you dont want the law against you.

Contact the Sheriff of CLEO for your area.

WHat if that gun was used in a crime? all sorts of nastiness could come your way, it could be listed as stolen…

First off, what is your location?

Secondly, how was this gun gotten? Seized from a non-paying lease-holder? Honestly, a competent firearms law attorney would be a better place to start, and not on an internet forum…

im in alabama. and yes someones unit who had not paid. there units get auctioned off.

Registered?

Contact LE and find out if it is clean.
If so, it is yours.
No registration is required or exists.
