I posted this on another forum, but thought some here might also be interested—
Just prior to Christmas I picked up a GSG 1911, but hadn’t really had a chance to shoot her until last week.
First of all, I’m pretty impressed with the general look and feel of the gun. It feels heavy as it should, but the slide is of course light so 22LR ammunition can cycle it. No blemishes of any kind and after 350 rounds it still looks good with only a couple of use marks.
Dis-assembly is very very easy. Much easier, in my opinion, than a traditional 1911. But there is one key element you can mess up, and I’ll get to that in a moment.
The first trip to the range started good with almost exactly 100 rounds fired when a major problem occurred. The slide absolutely locked up after a round had been fired. The spent shell case was in the chamber and there was no pulling the slide back to get it out.
Took her home and called ATI (The importer) and explained the problem. Well, it turns out when I cleaned it prior to shooting, I put the recoil spring in backwards. The wide end needs to go toward the muzzle or it will lock the gun up. They explained how to get the gun apart, which was a no brainer, I re-assembled and headed back to the range for another 250 rounds.
Accuracy, was surprisingly not as good as I hoped for. Or, to be more accurate with my wording, good accuracy was more difficult to accomplish than I had expected. At 5 - 7 yards I could put the majority of rounds into a 2.5 inch circle; but I really had to work at it! With any increase in speed, the hit ring grew to 4 to 6 inches. Also, the gun was shooting high.
Well, I switched sights to the high one. (They provide three front sights, low, medium, and high) This brought the point of impact a little low. So I did a little quick sandy and am now happy with the point of impact. Here’s the weird thing. The accuracy seemed to improved substantially as time went on; now I guess it could be argued I improved; but I’m an experienced shooter and I’m not sure that is the case. I think the gun improved, is that possible? I don’t know but by the end of the session I was able to create 2 - 3 inch hole at 7 yards firing pretty rapidly.
The gun did start having failures to feed on the SECOND rounds of each magazine. I’ll clean her and see it that continues to happen.
So overall I’d give her 8 rounds of 10. She’s not perfect, but she’s a lot of fun. The bugs seem minor, and the accuracy seems to be working itself out. (Well except when I put the silencer on her, but that’s a different issue)
I used both high velocity and sub-sonic CCI and Federal ammunition with equal success. I also tried Aguila SuperExtra Subsonic with zero success.
