I use a Grey Guns guide rod in my Sig Legion X5 and have liked it. I see where they also make them for the 226 variety and was considering trying one in one of my 226’s.
Anyone with experience with their 226 guns and if so, which spring did you go with? Are they also using 1911 springs as well?
I only have one P226 not marked “Made in W. Germany” and it’s an early P226 tactical. Never really used non factory parts in any of them but Grey Guns has a solid rep when it comes to SIGs.
Why did you feel you had to replace the guide rod on a Sig Legion X5? I thought Legions were supposed to be top tier of what Sig has to offer these days.
Its been so long I am not 100% sure. But I think it was beefier and heavier taking a little pop out of recoil. But it still uses 1911 springs so I think that was it. Its not a captured system some people dont like because they can’t tune their springs.
I have one in my 226 Legion, not sure it makes any difference.
They take 226 recoil springs, GGI has pink stiffer ones if you are always shooting max power loads.
I just use the stock 226 spring and shoot quite a bit of 9mm NATO and the Winchester 115 gr duty ammo that’s a bit spicy with no issues.
PB, the Grey Guns guide rod doesn’t get you any advantage in a 226 Legion because the Legion already has a solid guide rod. The standard 226’s guide rod is hollow.
Wolf has different weight recoil springs if you want to go that route.
Of all the stuff I’ve fiddled with I never felt the need to install a solid rod in all of my other Sigs.
If ya just gotta spend some money with GGI I would go with a strut kit.
A little more than the Sig Armorer Superstrut but it comes with a base, a couple of main springs, 18 and 19# I believe and a sear spring.
I used the 19#, didn’t mess with the sear spring. https://grayguns.com/product/p-series-custom-strut-system/
Much smoother DA pull, the mainspring compresses in a straight line, doesn’t rub on the strut or get bound up on one side.
SIG DA/SA triggers are probably the best triggers of any DA/SA handgun I’ve ever used. I’d never mess with them. There are some guns out there with a better trigger SIG P49, HK P7, Series 70 1911s and the like but the SIG trigger is what has kept me mostly carrying a P226 since the first one I got in 1985.
I’ve only had one Sig trigger that was bad by any standard.
The M11A1 I have had the worst trigger by far and what started me down that road.
I figured it would sort itself out but after 1,000 rounds it wasn’t.
The DA pull was over 12 lbs and the SA pull was around 5 and felt like gravel.
It got the first version of the ELS, the EDC/SOT, SA Superstrut with a 20 lb spring and an Armory Craft hammer.
Nothing polished just dropped in.
That got me a smooth 6.5 DA pull and a 3.5 lb SA pull with no creep.
That pretty much ruined the triggers in the rest of them and eventually they all got the same thing.
I feel that the Legions should have gotten the ELS trigger instead of the PSAIT, which is the only thing different than the rest of them as the Legion uses the same internal parts as all the rest.
My old spur hammer 220 did get updated with the new E2 strut, hammer and SRT.
I tried an AC trigger but don’t like them so went back to the original.
It has quite a bit of creep in SA now, almost like a two stage trigger but an AC hammer will fix that.
The SA has the Superstrut for the 220 now so will get one whenever I get around to it.
Yes, I am alarmed how well I shoot my DA pull with my 226. That trigger has never caused me to miss a first round hit in competitions which I would have bet against that just pulling the trigger in dry fire. It doesn’t stack and is very smooth, also I think the grip is very helpful as well.
I just pulled an RMR off that gun and replaced with a Holosun because with suppressor height sights in that window got real busy. Looking forward to shooting dot more in comps now.
There is a generation, and I suspect you are part of it, that grew up on wheels guns but was also there in the early days of modern combat handguns so we trained to shoot six rounds double action for accuracy and speed. So when we finally graduated to DA/SA autos with decent triggers, the stock guns felt like race guns.
I love 1911 triggers, but I can get a 9mm P226 back on target faster. The trigger on my HK P7 is a dream but I think I’m still overall faster with a P226 which has the benefit of twice the magazine capacity. Lots of guns come close, I really love my USPs and P30, but for whatever reason I just shoot P226s more effectively.
I can shoot Glocks, but not as well as some people can, so I just keep shooting my SIGs.
I’m not too enamored with after market guide rods or swanky struts. The e2 strut makes sense and short reset kit can help and in fact approaches the p99 in “shortness”. The SIG P series IS excellent generally in both DA and SA. Great guns.
It’s weird, my Sig M11A1 has the same type of heavy trigger pull in DA and SA but my other Sig 229 9mm doesnt… And I don’t shoot the M11 as well either…
Does the M11 have a magazine disconnect? I have a P228 in 9mm that the M11 was sorta patterned after and the trigger is the same as my P226s, I know they changed some things with the M11 but I can’t believe they’d screw with the trigger (well I believe it, but it would have been a terrible idea). I almost bought a M11 but I own a P228.
Along with the phosphated internals with the New style strut (short strut, long base) they also decided that a true “military” pistol needed a 25# mainspring making the trigger more like a P6.
I believe newer ones have the same Super Blue finish like everything else, may come with an E2 strut and normal spring.
They don’t have the tramp stamp and have proper 229 grip panels now.
The Superstrut was made for the 226 SAO due to the safety hitting something.
But it works well in everything due to better geometry.
Here’s my 229 Select with an E2 strut, backside is compounded. With the New Style strut looking like it was made with a chisel and hammer it really dug into the strut. You can round it all off and polish it so it’s not as bad.
With the SS it compresses straight and doesn’t make contact.
M11A1
I picked up a GGI strut when I got the ELS for the Legion and an Armory Craft hammer.
Only had to take it apart once for that.
Fitted some Allround grips and swapped out the slide lock for a normal one.
