Just depends on who is making up the spec (will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer).

This should give you a pretty good idea what the different barrel contours are about:
I’m looking some mid length 16" uppers from CMMG. They have gov and medium contoured versions. Is there anything performance wise different between the two?
The medcon is thicker under the handguards. I’m not sure how much difference you’ll see in performance, as I’ve never used one of their medcon uppers.
