I have decided to go ahead and SBR my Colt 6450, so the process has begun. I purchased a Rock River Arms A4 9mm upper to replace the fixed carry handle upper that was on it. Everything went together very well and functioned flawlessly. The Colt BCG, charging handle, and barrel went together great in the new upper. Next, the Aimpoint micro T1 with LaRue went on and looks fantastic. I took it to the range yesterday and put several mags of hand loads, WWB, and Federal ammo through it, with no issues at all. Next on the list are 7" barrel, Spikes BAR, and suppressor, Troy sights and a few other goodies. Here is how she looks currently…
I just did the exact same thing re. the RRA upper a few weeks ago…with the same excellent result. I’d been jonesing for one of G&R’s flat top packages until I ran across the RRA 9mm uppers and realized I could do the same thing myself. My 6450 has always ran like a top so it was a known quantity. I’ve yet to have a malfunction with any sort of hp ammo, and it puts 5 Winchester Ranger-T 147’s into an inch at 50 yards.
I originally got it with the idea of SBR’ing it, but before the upper receiver swap I was reluctant because I wasn’t real sure I was going to keep the thing… now I’m leaning that way again.
Excellent,! Glad to hear someone else having positive results with the RRA upper. I was a little worried at how it would run and I searched for feedback with little success. I’m looking at going with a Gemtech. I am also kinda leaning towards a 5’’ barrel instead of a 7’’ but haven’t made my mind up 100% yet. My only gripe with this rifle is that I wish Colt would have had at least an option for a flat top upper when I purchased mine. This thing has been very accurate out to 75-100 yards.
I have no clue what barrel I am going with at this point. I do know that I do not want to cut down the original Colt barrel. I will be shooting the piss out of this rifle so I want something that is going to hold up to alot of use. This is going to be strictly a range toy/ Home defense weapon and is also my first SBR build, so I am taking my time and looking at what others have used successfully. I was also looking at a POF P9X rail for this build as well as a Gemtech multimount 3 lug adapter. Any and all advise is greatly appreciated!
